Chapter Two: An Unyielding Wall

497 Words
The classroom buzzed with the aftermath of Professor Caldwell's lecture on diplomatic treaties. Students chatted animatedly as they packed their bags, but Leo Winslow had only one thing on his mind: Evelyn Cartwright. As she methodically stowed her notebook and pens, Leo seized the opportunity to approach her. He maneuvered through the exiting students, his confidence buoyed by the fleeting eye contact they'd shared earlier. Despite his princely upbringing, he found this simple interaction more nerve-wracking than addressing the Eldorian Parliament. Evelyn ’s indifference was a mystery he was determined to solve. "Hey, Evelyn ," he called out, attempting a casual tone. She looked up, her hazel eyes narrowing slightly in suspicion. "Yes?" Her voice was cool, a stark contrast to the warmth he had hoped for. Leo flashed his most charming smile. "I just wanted to say, your points in class today were really impressive. You have a knack for cutting through the noise." Evelyn 's expression remained impassive. "Thanks," she said, her tone indicating she didn't find the compliment particularly meaningful. She swung her backpack over her shoulder and made to leave. Desperate to keep the conversation going, Leo stepped slightly in her path. "I was wondering if you'd like to grab a coffee sometime. We could discuss some of the topics from class, or maybe just relax for a bit?" Evelyn 's eyebrows raised in mild surprise. "Discuss topics from class? Really, Leo?" He faltered, not expecting the question to turn on him so quickly. "Yeah, I mean, I thought it could be... productive. Or just nice, you know, to get to know each other better outside of the lecture hall." Evelyn gave a short, humorless laugh. "Nice? Let me guess, you're not used to people saying no to you." Leo was taken aback. "What makes you say that?" She shrugged. "You're Leo Winslow. Everyone either wants to be your friend or your enemy. But I don't play those games." Before he could muster a response, she stepped around him and walked out the door, leaving him standing there, more intrigued and frustrated than before. Her words echoed in his mind: "I don't play those games." Leo sighed, running a hand through his tousled hair. This wasn’t how he’d imagined the conversation going. He had thought his charm would at least earn him a coffee date, but Evelyn was proving to be as unpredictable as ever. As he exited the building, he spotted Evelyn walking across the quad, her ponytail bouncing with each determined step. He couldn’t help but admire her resolve. She was different from anyone he had ever met, and that only made him more determined to break through her icy exterior. With renewed resolve, Leo decided he wouldn’t give up so easily. He would find a way to get to know Evelyn Cartwright, even if it meant stepping out of his comfort zone. After all, if he could navigate the complexities of international politics, surely he could handle one extraordinary girl.
