The Betrayer's Mark

1015 Words
Sable's POV We slipped into the forest under the cover of deepening night, moving as quietly as we could. The howls had grown louder, closer, and my heart pounded in time with them. Vex led the way, his steps sure and silent on the uneven ground. Knox stayed right beside me, one hand occasionally brushing my arm like he needed to make sure I was still there. Elias brought up the rear, his breathing a little labored but steady. The bond between us sharpened with every step. Brief flashes came through, Vex’s quiet determination mixed with a deep worry for the pack he was leaving behind, Knox’s fierce protectiveness that bordered on anger at anyone who would threaten me. It wasn’t just feelings anymore. Sometimes it felt like pieces of their thoughts slipped through. Keep her safe. Don’t lose her. The connection pulled me forward even when my legs wanted to give out. We pushed deeper into the trees, following the rough map Elias had given me. The forest grew thicker, branches snagging at my clothes and tugging at my hair. Every snap of a twig made me tense, my breath catching in my throat. Vex held up a hand suddenly and we all stopped, bodies going still. “Hidden trail,” he whispered. “Only pack members know this one. The hunters shouldn’t have found it so fast.” Knox crouched down, examining the ground, his fingers brushing over disturbed leaves. “Someone’s guiding them. An insider. No other way they could move this quick.” My stomach dropped. The idea that someone from the pack we had just left behind was helping the hunters made my skin crawl. I had barely started to feel safe here. Now even that safety was poisoned. I swallowed hard and tried to keep my breathing even. We kept moving, but the tension grew thicker with every step. Elias stayed close to me, his presence a quiet anchor. “Your parents trusted very few people. If there’s a betrayer, it’s someone who knew the old secrets. Someone who was there the night everything fell apart.” A low growl came from the shadows ahead. Three figures burst from the trees, eyes glowing with wolf light. The hunters had caught up. Vex shifted in a blur of motion, his form rippling into a powerful black wolf. Knox followed a second later, his wolf form slightly leaner but no less fierce. I felt the bond flare hot as they positioned themselves between me and the attackers. Elias pulled me back, his hand firm on my arm, his grip surprisingly strong for his age. One of the hunters lunged. Vex met him with a snarl that shook the leaves. The clash of bodies and teeth filled the night air. Knox took down another, his movements fast and brutal, a flash of teeth and power. The third came straight for me. I stumbled back, the silver mark on my wrist burning like fire, the pain sharp enough to make my vision blur. The seal cracked further. Power surged through me in a sudden burst. I didn’t know what I was doing, but instinct took over. I thrust my hand forward and the attacker flew backward as if hit by an invisible wall. Trees cracked. The ground shook beneath our feet. The burst of power saved us, but I knew it had also revealed our exact location to anyone listening. The air smelled of ozone and blood. Vex and Knox shifted back, breathing hard, their clothes torn in places. Vex immediately moved to my side, his body shielding me as he scanned the trees, one arm around my shoulders. Knox reached for my hand in the dark, his grip warm and steady. I squeezed back without thinking, the contact grounding me when everything else felt like it was spinning out of control. Elias knelt beside one of the fallen attackers and picked up a small token that had fallen from his pocket. He turned it over in his hand, his face going pale in the moonlight. “This mark... it should be impossible. It belongs to someone believed dead since the night Sable’s parents disappeared. Or at least... someone close to them.” I stepped closer, my legs shaky. The token was a small silver disc with a jagged line through a moon. It looked old. Familiar in a way that made my skin crawl. Elias’s voice dropped, almost reluctant. “One of Sable’s parents may still be alive. Or someone they trusted enough to share their secrets with. They may be leading the hunters.” The words landed like a blow. I stared at the token, the world tilting around me. My mother or father alive? Or someone they had trusted leading the people who wanted me dead? The thought made my knees weak. I leaned against a tree, trying to catch my breath, the rough bark pressing into my back. Vex moved to my side, his hand gentle on my arm. “We’ll figure this out. Together.” Knox stood on my other side, his presence solid and warm. “We’re not letting them touch you. No matter who they are.” We kept moving after that, pushing harder through the forest. Vex took point, clearing branches for me without a word, his movements deliberate and protective. Knox stayed at my side, his hand finding mine again when the path grew rough, his thumb brushing over my knuckles in silent reassurance. The bond helped guide us, giving me flashes of their strength when my own faltered. Every shared glance, every protective touch, every quiet word between us wove us tighter together. After what felt like hours, the trees thinned and we reached a supposedly abandoned cabin from my fragmented memories. It looked weathered, vines climbing the walls, the roof sagging in places. But a lamp was already burning inside. Warm light spilled through the cracked window, casting long shadows across the clearing. A voice called out from within, soft but clear. “I’ve been waiting for you, little moon girl.”
