I called Carla before I'd even reached my car.
"It's midnight," she said. "This better be good."
"Richard Ashford just got shot. I need you to help me find someone named Evelyn, connected to the Ashford family somehow. That's all I have."
Silence on the line, then the fast clack of a keyboard. Carla didn't waste time asking questions when the stakes were clear.
"Evelyn Ashford?"
"Try it."
More typing. "Nothing recent. There's an Evelyn Marsh, deceased, no connection I can see. Wait." A pause. "There's a marriage record. Evelyn Ashford, sister to Noah's mother, married a man named Carl Whitfield twelve years ago. No public records after that. She just stops existing on paper."
"Address?"
