Chapter 4.
Kara.
“Wow, so it took almost dying for you to finally let me into your room,” I said, blinking as I sat up slowly, the pain in my side still there but dull.
My voice was filled with sarcasm, trying to lighten the mood.
Lucien sat across from me, arms crossed, jaw tight. His eyes locked on mine, but there was no humor in his face.
“Don’t joke about that,” he said, his voice low and serious.
I tried to sit up straighter, but he moved to help me. I quickly pushed his hands away.
“I’m fine,” I snapped.
“Does it still hurt?” he asked, eyeing the bandage.
“It’ll heal,”I replied, brushing past him to stand. “I’m a vampire, remember?”
His tone changed quickly. “Next time I say let’s go, you listen. You don’t run into danger just because you feel like it.”
“Oh, here we go.” I rolled my eyes. “I knew it. I was just waiting for this moment. The switch. From nice to angry vampire dad. You were just waiting to blow up at me.”
“This is serious, Do you realize that.”
I spun to face him. “Oh please, don't start. I was helping.”
“Helping?” he scoffed. “You nearly got yourself killed, Kara. That gun had silver bullets, if I hadn’t been there, you would’ve bled out in some dirty alley.”
“You act like that was my plan! Maybe if you'd told me there were vampire hunters out there with silver bullets, trying to kill us, I wouldn't have rushed in!”
His eyes narrowed. “So now it’s my fault?”
I raised my voice. “I’m not saying that! I’m saying stop acting like you’re in charge of me!”
Lucien stepped closer, his voice colder now. “Someone has to be. You don’t know what you’re doing.”
I laughed bitterly. “And you think yelling at me is teaching? Maybe you should try actually explaining something before going all angry vampire dad!”
There was a pause, thick with tension. I could see the anger behind his eyes and something else too. Disappointment maybe.
Then he said it.
“You know what? I should’ve just let you go on with your life when I found you.”
His words hit me like a punch. My chest tightened, my throat burned. I looked at him, stunned.
“Wow,” I whispered. “So that’s how you really feel.”
He looked away.
"Well I didn’t ask for this, I would have been okay on my own." I yelled at him.
"You think this is easy for me? Dealing with you, cleaning up your messes, keeping you alive? I’ve done everything I could...”
“No, you’ve done everything you wanted to do,” I cut in. “Because it makes you feel in control. That’s what this is really about.”
Neither of us said anything. The silence was loud and ugly.
"I'm sorry, I'm a burden."
I turned and stormed out of the room, I couldn't stand him anymore and I couldn't believe the words he said.
I grabbed a bottle of blood from the fridge and drank it even though it tasted like metal and ash. I was angry and anger made me hungry so I had to manage.
The house was quiet after that. Too quiet.
Lucien didn’t come after me.
And even though I was furious, a small, stupid part of me wished he had.
The days after our fight felt heavy. The house was too quiet not the kind of quiet that feels calm, but the kind that makes everything feel tense. Like the silence was pressing down on me.
Lucien wasn’t around much. When he was, he didn’t speak to me. No teasing. No smirks. Just quick glances, then he’d disappear again. He was giving me the silent treatment, and I hated it more than I thought I would.
I told myself I didn’t care. That I was fine on my own. But every time I walked past a room, expecting to see him there, and didn’t, I felt it. A strange, empty feeling I didn’t want to admit.
Why did his silence hurt me so much? He was harsh, cold sometimes, and honestly, annoying. But somehow, when he was gone, the house felt colder and lonelier.
So, I tried to keep myself busy.
If he didn’t want to help me anymore, then fine. I’d figure it out myself. I practiced running, pushing myself to go faster. I tested my strength by breaking wood and lifting heavy things.
I trained my hearing, trying to pick up the smallest sounds around the house. I even tested how fast I could heal by making small cuts and watching them close.
Distracting myself didn't help much, maybe it wasn’t just about training or surviving this vampire life. Maybe, I was starting to care about him. More than I wanted to.
That thought made me angry at myself.
But late at night, when the house was quiet, and I was alone with my thoughts, I caught myself thinking about his face, the way his eyes softened sometimes, even if just a little. The way he said things that made me want to push back, but also made me laugh.
I missed that. I missed him.
I don’t know when it happened, but I realized I didn’t just want Lucien to be near me, I wanted him to notice me. To care. Not just as a teacher or a guard, but… something more.
The thought scared me.
I shook my head and tried to push the feelings away. I focused on training instead.
Still, every time I heard a door open or footsteps approach, my heart jumped, hoping it was him.
But the silence stayed.
And so did the space between us.
