The mysterious man

Chapter 2. Kara. I woke up with a pounding headache and in a strange room. The room was dimly lit and silent. I didn’t recognize anything, the cracked walls, the old furniture, the eerie calm. Then it hit me, the last thing I remembered. Blood. The men. The terrified woman. I sat up slowly, trying to make sense of it, when I heard a voice behind me. "Finally, you're up." My entire body tensed. I knew that voice. The man from the alley. I turned sharply. "So now you kidnap me?" I snapped at him. He was already standing right in front of me. Tall, calm and intimidating. There was something about him, his presence made my knees weak, like I couldn’t decide whether to run or lean closer. "Kidnap?" he repeated with a chuckle. "I saved you." I frowned. "Who are you? What do you want from me?" "I'm Lucien. And I'm a vampire," he said, like it was the most normal thing in the world. A slow smirk formed on his lips. "Vampire?" I repeated, shocked. "That’s not real. That’s just stories." "Really?" he raised an eyebrow. "Think about it. The hunger. The blood. It all fits, doesn’t it?" It all made sense now. I looked at my reflection in a cracked mirror nearby. "I'm a monster," I whispered. Lucien stood behind me. "Don’t be so dramatic. You should be happy you’re not weak anymore. You’ve evolved." I turned from the mirror and stormed toward the front door. I couldn’t listen to this. I needed to get out of here. "I wouldn’t..." he started, but it was too late. The moment I opened the door, sunlight poured in like fire. I screamed, slamming it shut and backing away, my skin burning where the light had touched. Lucien just stood there, leaning casually against the wall, amused. “I tried to warn you.” I sank onto an old couch, pressing my hands to my face. "This is insane. I don’t know who I am. I just woke up in a graveyard with no memories, and no idea what’s happening. It’s like I'm living a nightmare." Lucien’s voice softened a little. "Some vampires lose their memories after the change. Especially if their death was… traumatic." "Will I ever remember who I was?" I asked, barely above a whisper. "I don’t know," he replied honestly. "But I can help you with what comes next." I looked up at him, confused. "You’re a newborn vampire, Kara. You’re strong but unstable. The hunger will control you unless you learn to control it. I can teach you. Everything, your powers, the rules, how to survive without turning into a full-blown monster." I gave a bitter laugh. "In just two days, I’ve already killed four people. So yeah… I think I could use the help.” Lucien’s expression shifted slightly—less teasing, more serious. Then, just like that, he walked to the door. "I’ll be back before dark. Don’t go anywhere," he said with a smirk. "Not like I have much of a choice," I muttered as he stepped outside. Strangely, the sun didn’t hurt him. He didn’t burn. That alone told me he wasn’t just any vampire. I was stuck here, in a creepy house with a stranger who claimed he could help me. And the worst part? Some part of me trusted him. Even though I knew I shouldn’t. **** Sitting alone in the quiet house was driving me crazy. I had nothing to do. The old wooden floor creaked under me every time I moved. I’d already looked around the room at least ten times. Finally, I stood up. I couldn’t help it anymore, I had to look around. The hallway was long and dark, with old paintings on the wall and a dusty carpet under my feet. I tried a few doors. Most were locked. But one opened. It looked like a bedroom. Not what I expected. There was a big bed in the middle, covered in dark sheets. Bookshelves lined the walls. A faint smell of something warm and familiar filled the air. It felt like him. Lucien. “I see you don’t like following rules,” a deep voice said behind me. I jumped and turned quickly. Lucien stood in the doorway, arms crossed. His face calm, but his eyes sharp. “You scared me,” I muttered. “You’re not supposed to be in here,” he said, walking in slowly. “I was bored,” I said. I stepped inside, looking around the room. “I thought vampires slept in coffins,” I said, trying to lighten the mood. Lucien gave a small smile. “Too uncomfortable. I like beds.” He guided me gently out of the room, his hand brushing mine. Back in the main room, he handed me a dark bottle. “What’s this?” “Animal blood. Drink it. You need to feed.” I opened the bottle and took a small sip then nearly spit it out. “That’s disgusting!” “You’ll get used to it,” he said, sitting down across from me. “I’d rather not.” We sat quietly for a bit. “So… can I turn into a bat?” I asked. He raised an eyebrow. “No.” “Fog?” “No.” “So what can I do?” He leaned back. “You have stronger senses, super speed, fast healing, and eventually… more.” “Eventually?” I asked. “Some vampires develop rare powers over time. But it’s different for everyone.” “You have them, don’t you?” I asked. He didn’t answer. There was a small silence between us, then I asked the one thing I really wanted to know. “How did you go out into the sun?” He showed me a ring on his finger. “Bloodstone. It protects against sunlight.” “I want one,” I said quickly. “No.” “Why not?” “You’re not ready.” I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes. “Of course not.” He laughed softly and disappeared down the hallway. I sat for a while, sipping more of the awful blood. My body felt a bit better, less shaky. The hunger faded for now. But I couldn’t stop thinking. Who was I before this? What kind of person had I been? Did I have a family? Friends? Would I ever remember?
