CHAPTER 5: CRACKS IN THE SHADOWS

713 Words
The world tilted dangerously. My legs turned to water, and my Seeker’s Gaze finally burned out, plunging my vision into a heavy, dark gray haze. But I didn’t let myself black out. I refused to be the weak little Omega who fainted after a fight. Instead of hitting the frozen stone, I was hauled up against a solid, muscular chest. Heavy, warm arms wrapped around my waist, holding me so tight I could feel the thunderous, erratic beat of Silas's heart. "I've got you, little wolf," Silas murmured in my ear. His voice was a complex, jagged mix of absolute possessiveness and a dark, dangerous fascination. "You just proved your worth. Now let's see if we can keep you alive to use it." I tried to push against his chest, to demand he let me stand on my own, but a sudden, violent wave of heat erupted from the core of my body. The adrenaline from the fight with Tanya was fading, and in its place, my biology was revolting. My broken rejection scar burned like a brand. Without the focus of the fight to hold it back, my scent exploded in the confined courtyard. It wasn’t just the sweet smell of a female anymore. It was a thick, intoxicating spike of pure, unclaimed distress and arousal. The effect on the surrounding wolves was cataclysmic. Low, guttural growls ripped through the air, but they weren't directed at me as a threat. They were the sounds of dominant males losing their minds. Dozens of warriors stepped forward, their pupils dilating until their eyes were nearly black. The discipline of the most militarized pack in the north evaporated in a heartbeat, replaced by raw, ancestral instinct. "Mine," a large scarred enforcer growled, taking a step toward us, his claws extending. "Step back, she's packless!" another snapped, baring his fangs at the first. Within seconds, a full-blown brawl erupted in the middle of the courtyard. Warriors who had trained together for years were now tearing into each other, snapping jaws and throwing punches, all driven by the overwhelming urge to get to me, to claim the unclaimed. "Idiots!" Silas’s voice didn't just carry; it shook the very stones beneath our feet. The pure, crushing weight of his Alpha aura slammed down on the courtyard like a physical blow. The fighting wolves froze, whined, and several forced themselves to drop to their knees, bowing their heads in submission to their Alpha's dominant power. But Silas wasn't taking any chances. Without another word, he swept his arm under my knees and lifted me effortlessly against his chest, carrying me in a bridal style that screamed ownership. "Open the inner gates!" Silas roared at the guards, who were still shaking off the effects of my scent. "Now!" "Alpha!" A man with sharp features and a severe scar running down his cheek rushed forward. It was Silas's Beta, Marek. He was holding a tablet and looked pale. "Let them fight it out, Marek," Silas snarled, his eyes still dark blue as he adjusted his grip on me, pulling me impossibly closer to his neck. "I am taking her to my quarters. Lock down the perimeter." "It's worse than that, Silas," Marek said, his voice laced with urgency, ignoring the chaos of the submitting wolves behind him. "We just analyzed the vial from Tanya's pocket. It wasn't just a scent-masker. It’s a chemical beacon. It transmits a micro-frequency signal. Moon Ridge hunters have been tracking her movements for the last three days. They know our patrol routes, our blind spots... and they know exactly where the perimeter is weakest." My heart stopped. Kaelen. He wasn't just looking for me to punish me; he was using Tanya to map out Silas's destruction. Silas stiffened, his body turning into a wall of hard, unforgiving granite. He looked down at me, his eyes burning with a sudden, freezing calculation. He didn't look like a savior anymore. He looked like the monster I had feared. "Well, little wolf," Silas said, his voice dropping to a smooth, terrifyingly calm purr. "It looks like our war is starting much sooner than expected. I hope your eyes are ready to work overtime, because you are about to show me every single trap your ex-mate has laid for us."
