The parking lot had nearly emptied, and somewhere behind us a car door slammed, followed by the low sound of an engine starting. I expected Luca to do what Luca always did when things became too serious. Make a joke. Say something annoying. Find a way to turn the moment sideways so neither of us has to stand directly inside it. He didn't. He only looked at me with that same unreadable expression he'd worn when he told me calling me his fake girlfriend had started feeling like the lie.
