As Arthur pondered his next move, a different kind of storm was brewing. Jenny, Arthur's ex-girlfriend, had been tirelessly tracking him down ever since he abruptly left the city. She'd heard through mutual acquaintances of his frequent trips to a remote province, and fueled by a potent cocktail of jealousy and unrequited love, she'd arrived, unannounced, in the small town.
Jenny was everything Alice was not: polished, sophisticated, and aggressively assertive. She wasted no time in finding Arthur’s rented house and, seeing it empty, inquired about him at a nearby sari-sari store. It didn't take long for her to pinpoint Alice as the woman who had stolen Arthur's attention.
One afternoon, as Arthur and Alice were enjoying a peaceful picnic by the river, sharing stories and laughter under the warm sun, Jenny appeared. She stood at the edge of their idyllic scene, a stark contrast in her designer clothing and icy demeanor.
"Arthur," she said, her voice sharp against the gentle sounds of the river. "We need to talk."
Arthur's face paled. He stood up, pulling Alice protectively behind him. "Jenny, what are you doing here?"
"What does it look like? I came to see you," she replied, her eyes fixed on Arthur, seemingly oblivious to Alice's presence. "I miss you, Arthur. And I know you miss me too. This… this rural fantasy can't possibly be what you want."
Alice stood her ground, her hand finding Arthur’s. Her gaze met Jenny's, unwavering and filled with quiet strength. “Arthur is happy here,” she said, her voice calm but firm.
Jenny scoffed. "Happy? Living in a backwater town with a… police officer? Don’t be ridiculous. Arthur belongs in the city, with someone who understands him, someone like me." She turned back to Arthur, her voice softening. "Come back with me, Arthur. We can have everything we ever wanted."
Arthur's jaw tightened. "Jenny, I’ve told you, it's over. I'm with Alice. And I am happy here. You need to accept that."
But Jenny refused to listen. Over the next few days, she became a constant presence in Arthur's life. She would show up at his house, his volunteer work, even the local market, always with the same plea: to come back to the city, to return to her. She actively undermined his relationship with Alice, telling him that he was wasting his potential, that the province was holding him back.
One evening, she cornered Arthur outside the local church after a community event. "You're making a mistake, Arthur," she hissed, grabbing his arm. "This isn’t you. You're a sophisticated doctor, not some farmer's apprentice. You belong in the city, saving lives in a real hospital, not patching up chickens!"
Arthur gently but firmly removed her hand. "You don’t know me, Jenny. Not anymore. I'm staying here. With Alice."
Desperate, Jenny changed tactics. One night, she sought out Alice, finding her walking home alone after her shift.
"He's using you, you know," Jenny said, her voice dripping with malice. "He's just bored. He'll leave you eventually, just like he left me."
Alice stood tall, refusing to let Jenny's words pierce her. "Arthur loves me," she said simply.
"Love? Don't be naive. He's a city boy. He'll never belong here. He'll never truly commit." Jenny paused, leaning closer. "Besides, do you really think he's told you everything about his past? About us? There’s a reason he left the city so suddenly."
Jenny's words planted a seed of doubt in Alice's mind, a seed that threatened to blossom into a full-blown weed. She knew that Arthur had a past, that he had left the city for a reason. But had he told her everything? Was Jenny right? Was he just waiting for the right moment to leave?
The weight of the community's scrutiny, coupled with Jenny's relentless campaign, was starting to take its toll. Alice started to pull away from Arthur, her smiles less frequent, her embrace less warm. She was afraid, afraid of being hurt, afraid of losing him.
Arthur noticed the change in Alice, the subtle distance that had crept between them. He knew that Jenny was behind it, and he knew that he had to do something drastic to prove his love for Alice and to silence Jenny once and for all. He decided it was time to make his announcement, not just for Alice, but for the entire community. He would propose. He would ask her to marry him, in front of everyone. He hoped that a public declaration of his love and commitment would be enough to banish Jenny and the doubts she had sown. But he also knew, deep down, that the fight was far from over.
