Chapter four Chasing shadows

The bar's familiar atmosphere buzzed with the usual hum of conversation and clinking glasses, the warm light from the hanging lamps cast a golden glow across the wooden tables and the scent of spilled beer mixed with faint traces of smoke. Alex Kensington sat at the bar's edge drumming his fingers against the edge of his glass; his sharp blue eyes scanning the room searching for one face in particular. But once again, she wasn't there. “Not tonight either, huh?” Rollo said from the stool beside him, sipping his drink his tone was light but there was an undertone of concern. “Nope,” Alex's jaw tightened. Rollo gave him a side glance. “ You know, you've been coming here almost every other night for the past week. People are going to think you've taken up residency” Alex leaned back, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “She's avoiding me” “Can you blame her? You know what kind of trouble this could cause” Alex gave him a stern look, but Rollo wasn't wrong. Diana had every reason to stay away, considering the tensions between their packs. Still, knowing that didn't make the absence any easier to accept. “I'm just going to see her one more time” Alex muttered. “There's something there, Rollo, I know it” “ Are you sure you're not chasing a ghost?” Alex didn't answer, instead, he drank the rest of his drink, the bitterness spreading across his tongue, and he motioned to the bartender for another drink, he couldn't explain it, this wasn't some passing infatuation. Diana had captivated him in a way no one ever had, and the mystery surrounding her only deepened his fascination. Days turned into weeks, sometimes Alex went alone, and sometimes he dragged Rollo along but every visit ended the same way in disappointment, Diana was nowhere to be found. He knew it was reckless, knew he was pushing boundaries that shouldn't be crossed, but each night without seeing her felt like a small defeat, the growing ache that gnawed at him. The bar patrons grew accustomed to his presence, offering polite nods but keeping their distance. He wasn't exactly the most approachable figure when he was brooding over an absent woman. “Still nothing,” Rollo asked one evening as they walked out into the cool night air the stars scattered above them. “She's either avoiding me on purpose or…” “Or, she got the message” Rollo finished. “I don't care if it's dangerous, I need to talk to her” Rollo raised an eyebrow but said nothing; he knew his friend well enough to understand that once Alex set his mind on something, nothing would dissuade him. The next time Alex went to the bar, he arrived earlier than usual, his guts telling him she would be there. The sun had only started to set, the place was quieter than usual, and only a few regulars occupied the place. He took his usual seat by the bar, glancing out of habit, and then, like a dream there she was. Diana. She sat at the far end of the room, her hair falling loosely over her shoulders, a quiet elegance about her that made her seem out of place in that rusty bar. She hadn't noticed him yet, actually wasn't expecting to see him as he usually came to the back late, she was lost in her thoughts. Alex's heart gave a sharp jolt. He was on his feet before he could think, moving towards her. “Diana” She looked up, startled, and for a moment her icy blue eyes softened at the sight of him. But then, just as quickly, her expression hardened. She looked away quickly and made to bolt out of the bar, glancing nervously. “Diana, wait,” Alex said, his voice low and urgent. “By now you should have found out who I am” her voice shook. “We can't keep doing this” “Why not?” He asked, refusing to be dismissed. “Because it's too dangerous” Her voice was firm this time, but there was something beneath it, regret maybe, longing. “I don't care about the danger,” Alex said, holding her hands in his. “You said it yourself that night, we felt something. Are you going to pretend that wasn't real?” Diana looked away, biting her lip. “What we felt doesn't matter, our pack…” she said in a hushed tone. “Our pack, they'll never allow this” “I don't give a damn about what our pack thinks, this is between us Diana, just us” Her eyes met his again. “Yoh don't understand if they find out…” “Then we'll deal with it,” Alex said interrupting, his voice gentle but persistent. “Whatever happens, we'll figure it out together” Diana shook her head, pain flickering across her face. “It's not that simple. You have no idea what my father would do if he found out, he's already warned me” “He warned you?” She nodded. “He knows we've been meeting, he told me to stop and if I don't…” her voice trailed off, but Alex didn't need her to finish the statement. The implications were clear. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the weight of reality pressing down between them. “Is this what You want?” Alex asked quietly, shattered by her words. “ To end things even before they start?” Diana closed her eyes as if gathering strength. When she opened them again, her gaze was resolute but filled with sadness. “It doesn't matter what I want” “ It matters to me,” Alex said, almost raising his voice. Diana gave him a small, bittersweet smile. “You don't make things easy, do you?” For a moment it feels like the world around them faded leaving just the two of them suspended in that fragile moment. But then Diana stood her expression shifting back into one of careful control. “I have to go” “Diana” She placed a hand on his arm stopping him. “please, Alex let this go” He stared at her with thundering in his heart, he wanted to argue to make her stay but something in her gaze told him this wasn't the time. Diana gave him one last look, one that said everything she couldn't say aloud. then turned and walked away disappearing out the door and into the night. Alex stood watching her go, feeling the Sting of loss settle deep in his heart. But even as she slipped out of sight, He knew one thing for certain. This wasn't over, not by a long shot.
