"Daniella Carstens?" my homeroom teacher calls my name.
"Present," I reply.
She makes a tick on her list. "Brian Collins?" Silence. She lifts her head up from where she's leaning her back against her desk in the front of the class to look at the empty seat next to me. She sighs and continues on with roll-call.
