The idea to take a walk had been a good one. I felt more relaxed, and certainly more ready for whatever Lord Thaddeus was about to tell me.
Maybe it also helped that one glance at the city walls was enough to remind me that tonight I would be inside them.
I would see her.
She would feel my scent.
She would have to recognize the mate bond.
I didn’t dare think further than that moment.
Only then did I realize I had completely forgotten about Lord Thaddeus for a heartbeat. Thankfully, he was walking beside me in silence, calm and unbothered.
“I was happy to see that the king is doing well now. Even we heard the rumors and we were the last ones who should have,” I said.
“We feared the worst for a time. I won’t pretend otherwise.”
