Amelia's heart pounded against her ribs.
Rain poured from the dark sky, soaking her hair and clothes as she stared at the stranger standing before her.
"If you want to live..." he repeated calmly, his hand still extended.
"...get in the car."
Behind her, the masked men rushed closer.
"There!"
"She's not getting away!"
Amelia's breathing became uneven.
She didn't know the man in front of her.
But she knew the men chasing her wanted her dead.
For a split second, she had to choose.
Trust a stranger...
Or face certain death.
A gunshot echoed through the street.
The bullet struck a nearby streetlight, showering sparks onto the wet pavement.
"Move!" one of the stranger's bodyguards shouted.
Without another thought, Amelia climbed into the SUV.
The door slammed shut.
Instantly, the vehicle sped away.
More gunshots rang out behind them.
The driver swerved sharply around a corner as black SUVs appeared in pursuit.
Amelia grabbed the leather seat to keep herself from falling.
"What is happening?" she shouted.
No one answered immediately.
The stranger sat opposite her, composed as if this were an ordinary evening.
He removed his black leather gloves and placed them neatly beside him.
Only then did he meet her eyes.
"They're after the file."
Amelia tightened her grip on her briefcase.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You do."
His voice was calm.
"You just haven't accepted it yet."
She glared at him.
"Who are you?"
The man leaned back slightly.
"My name is Dante Romano."
The world seemed to stop.
Her eyes widened.
The name from Victor's file.
The feared mafia king.
"You..."
She instinctively reached for the door handle.
It wouldn't open.
"You locked the doors!"
"For your safety."
"My safety?" she snapped. "You're the one everyone fears!"
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Dante's lips.
"People fear many things they don't understand."
"I should have gone to the police."
"You still believe they can protect you?"
"They're the law."
"And laws can be bought."
His words hung heavily in the air.
Amelia wanted to argue.
She wanted to tell him he was wrong.
But Victor's warning echoed in her mind.
Don't trust the police.
Dante watched her expression carefully.
"He told you, didn't he?"
She looked up.
"He warned you."
"How do you know that?"
"Because Victor knew the truth."
The SUV suddenly jerked as another vehicle rammed it from behind.
The driver cursed.
"They're still on us, Boss."
Dante remained completely calm.
"Take the bridge."
"Yes, sir."
Amelia looked through the rear window.
Three black SUVs were racing after them.
"This is insane."
"No," Dante replied quietly.
"This is only the beginning."
He looked at the briefcase on her lap.
"Open it."
"No."
"The file."
"It belongs to my client."
"Your client is dead."
Silence filled the vehicle.
Amelia lowered her eyes.
Victor was gone.
And somehow...
His death had become her nightmare.
Dante spoke again.
"If you want answers, you're going to have to trust me."
She met his gaze.
"I don't trust criminals."
"And I don't trust lawyers."
The silence between them wasn't just filled with fear.
It was filled with challenge.
Neither of them looked away.
