Chapter 7

The Beginning of Us Anna sat on the edge of her bed, her mind wandering back to the time when she and Noah first met. It was hard to remember those days without feeling a pang in her chest. The love they had felt so real, so powerful—before everything changed. It was a warm, sunny day in late spring when their paths first crossed. Anna had been out with friends at a local bar, just trying to unwind after a hectic week. She wasn’t looking for love, wasn’t looking for anything beyond a few drinks and some laughter. But then Noah walked in, and everything changed. Anna had noticed him almost immediately. He was tall, with messy dark hair and a quiet intensity about him. His presence seemed to fill the room, but it was the way his eyes found hers that had stopped her in her tracks. He hadn’t approached her right away. Instead, he lingered by the bar, nursing his drink and observing the room. She watched him from the corner of her eye, trying not to be obvious. But she couldn’t help it. There was something magnetic about him. It wasn’t long before their eyes met again, and this time, he smiled. A small, confident smile that made her stomach flutter. “I couldn’t help but notice you,” he said, his voice low but warm, as he moved to sit beside her. Anna raised an eyebrow, slightly amused. “Oh really? What gave me away?” He chuckled, his smile widening. “You’ve got that look—the one where you’re pretending to not notice me noticing you.” She couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not pretending. I wasn’t even looking at you.” Noah’s expression softened, and there was a glimmer of something genuine in his eyes. “Fair enough. I’m Noah, by the way.” “I’m Anna.” They had talked for hours that night. What started as casual conversation turned into something deeper as they shared their stories, their dreams, their fears. It was easy with Noah. It felt like they had known each other for years. The connection was undeniable, instant. But there was a problem. Anna was in a relationship at the time. A serious one. She had been with her boyfriend, Tyler, for over two years. She loved him, or at least she thought she did. But sitting there, talking to Noah, she couldn’t deny that something was missing in her life—a spark that had faded long before Noah walked into it. Noah, however, had made no secret of his interest in her. He wasn’t deterred by her relationship. He didn’t push, but he didn’t back down either. He flirted lightly, kept the conversation playful but meaningful, as though he were testing the waters without crossing any lines. The more they talked, the more Anna felt a pull towards him. She found herself thinking about him after their first meeting, replaying their conversation in her head, wondering if she had made a mistake by not giving him a chance. Noah didn’t make it easy for her to forget him, either. Over the next few weeks, he appeared in the places she frequented—at coffee shops, bookstores, and even at mutual friends’ gatherings. Every time, he found an excuse to talk to her. His charm was undeniable, but it was more than just his looks. There was something real about him, something that made Anna feel seen in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time. Despite her growing feelings for Noah, she stayed with Tyler. She tried to ignore the nagging doubt that had settled in her mind. She tried to convince herself that her relationship was enough. But Noah wasn’t going anywhere. One night, after a particularly emotional argument with Tyler, Anna found herself at a crossroads. She was frustrated, tired, and uncertain about everything in her life. Noah had sent her a message that evening, asking if she wanted to grab a drink. She knew she should have said no. She knew it was wrong. But she couldn’t help herself. When they met that night, something shifted. The tension between them was palpable. Noah was there for her in a way that Tyler hadn’t been for months. He listened to her, made her laugh, and took the time to make her feel important. She didn’t feel judged or pressured—just seen. By the end of the night, they were standing outside, the cool air brushing against their faces. Noah stepped closer to her, his hand resting lightly on her arm. “I know you’re with someone else,” he said softly, his voice almost a whisper. “But I can’t ignore what I feel for you. I just need you to know that.” Anna’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know if she was ready to hear that. But she knew she couldn’t ignore the truth of it either. “You don’t have to make a decision right now,” Noah continued, sensing her hesitation. “I’m not asking you to leave him for me. I just want you to know that I’m here. Whenever you’re ready to figure things out.” Anna’s breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know if she was ready for that kind of decision, but she knew she couldn’t keep pretending that she wasn’t drawn to him. In the weeks that followed, Noah didn’t back down. He respected her relationship, but he was persistent. He wasn’t the type to let things go easily, especially when he believed in something. He continued to show up in her life, slowly and steadily proving that his feelings for her were genuine. It wasn’t long before Anna found herself at a breaking point with Tyler. Their relationship had been crumbling for months, but it took Noah’s unwavering affection and patience to make Anna realize that she was worthy of a love that didn’t feel like a burden. One night, after another heated argument with Tyler, Anna made the decision that had been lingering in her mind for so long. She ended things. It was Noah who had been there for her in a way that Tyler hadn’t. And despite the complications, despite the guilt and the uncertainty, she knew that Noah was the one she wanted to be with. But that decision wasn’t easy. It came with its own set of challenges. The guilt of leaving Tyler, the questions about whether she was making the right choice—it all weighed on her. Yet, when she was with Noah, those doubts seemed to fade. With him, she felt like she was finally where she was meant to be. It wasn’t a perfect love story. They had their fair share of hurdles, their moments of doubt, and their fights. But through it all, Noah fought for her. He never gave up, even when things got tough. Looking back, Anna realized how hard Noah had fought for her from the very beginning. He had seen something in her, something that made him believe they were meant to be together. And even though it hadn’t been easy, she was starting to believe it, too. And now, sitting alone in her bedroom, Anna couldn’t help but wonder if that fight was still worth it. Could she let go of the hurt and give him another chance? Could they rebuild something that had once seemed so perfect? She didn’t know the answer yet. But what she did know was that Noah’s love for her had never faltered, even after all they had been through. And maybe, just maybe, it was worth fighting for again.
