Chapter 10

780 Words
Whispers in the Silence Anna sat motionless in the dim hospital room, her chin resting in her hands as the steady rhythm of the heart monitor played on like a haunting lullaby. She hadn’t left Noah’s side for more than a few minutes since the accident. Nurses came and went, doctors checked vitals and adjusted machines, but Anna remained anchored there like a statue carved from worry. Three days had passed, and Noah still hadn’t opened his eyes. Every hour, Anna told herself it was time to take a break. Go outside. Breathe fresh air. But every time she stood to leave, her heart pulled her back. What if he woke up while she was gone? What if his eyes opened and she wasn’t the first thing he saw? She rubbed her temples, exhaustion pressing into her bones. The door creaked open, and Daniel stepped in quietly. He looked like he hadn’t slept either—his shirt slightly wrinkled, dark circles beneath his eyes. In his hands, he carried two cups of coffee. “You look like you’re going to collapse,” he said, setting one down beside her. “You need real rest, Anna. You can’t keep this up.” She took the coffee gratefully, murmuring a soft, “Thanks.” Daniel sat in the chair beside her but didn’t reach for her hand this time. He’d learned. Her distance wasn’t momentary—it was growing, solidifying like a wall between them. “Has he moved?” he asked. She shook her head. “No. He twitched once earlier, but the nurse said it could’ve been involuntary.” Daniel nodded slowly. “Anna… we need to talk.” She tensed. “Now?” “If not now, then when?” he asked gently. “You’ve been here with him day and night. You barely sleep. You don’t speak to me unless I ask a question. I’m not accusing you—I’m just trying to understand what’s happening to us.” Anna looked down at her coffee, unable to meet his gaze. “I don’t know,” she whispered. “Everything feels… upside down.” Daniel leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. “Do you still love him?” The question hung in the air like a storm cloud. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. “I shouldn’t. I tried not to. But seeing him like this… it’s like the past never fully let go of me.” Daniel sat back, exhaling. “That’s the thing, Anna. You’ve moved on in theory, but not in your heart. You’re still tied to him.” “I don’t want to be,” she said, her voice trembling. “He hurt me. He broke me. But now I look at him and… I remember the parts that didn’t.” Daniel rose to his feet. “Then maybe you need to figure that out. Because I love you, Anna. But I won’t beg to be chosen.” He kissed the top of her head gently, lingering a moment. Then he left the room without another word. Silence fell again. Anna sat frozen, Daniel’s words ringing in her ears. Later that evening, just as the sky outside turned from pink to slate, a noise made her jolt. A groan. Soft. Barely audible. She jumped to her feet, heart pounding. “Noah?” she whispered, leaning over the bed. His eyelids fluttered. His lips parted. Another faint groan escaped him. Then slowly—achingly slowly—his eyes opened. Anna’s breath caught. He blinked against the light, his expression dazed. Disoriented. But there was recognition in his eyes. “Anna?” he croaked. Her hand flew to her mouth. Tears spilled from her eyes before she could stop them. “I’m here,” she whispered, moving closer. “Don’t try to talk too much. Just rest.” But Noah shook his head weakly. “You… came back.” The words shattered something inside her. “I never really left,” she said, voice cracking. She reached for his hand this time and didn’t pull away. They stayed like that for minutes—just breathing the same air, connected through silence and memory. For a moment, the world outside didn’t exist. Just the hum of the machines, the quiet buzz of the fluorescent light, and the ghost of what they used to be. Noah’s grip tightened ever so slightly. Outside, Daniel stood at the end of the hallway, leaning against the cold wall. He could see through the small window in Noah’s room—saw the way Anna looked at him, saw the tears, saw the hand-holding. He turned away. He had seen enough.
