The Breaking Point The papers lay on the table between them like a death sentence. Anna had spent days working up the courage to do this, to sit across from Noah one last time and end what was left of their marriage. But now, as she looked at him,his shoulders tense, his fingers curled into fists.Doubt clawed at the edges of her resolve. No. She couldn’t let herself hesitate. She had spent too long second-guessing, too long hoping for a change that never came. This was the only way forward. Noah’s jaw was clenched so tightly she thought he might break his teeth. His gaze flicked from the divorce papers to her, eyes dark and unreadable. “You’re serious.” It wasn’t a question. Anna swallowed hard. “Yes.” A humorless laugh escaped his lips as he leaned back in his chair. “So that’s it? You’re just done?” She forced herself to stay calm. “No, Noah. You were done the moment you decided to betray me.” He flinched. "I told you, it wasn’t like that. I—" "Don’t." She held up a hand, her voice cold. "I don’t want to hear excuses. I don’t want another lie. I want a divorce." Noah shook his head, shoving the papers back toward her. "No. I won’t sign them." Her heart pounded, but she refused to let him see the cracks in her armor. "You don’t have a choice." His eyes flashed with frustration. "We built a life together, Anna. You’re just going to throw that away?" "Do you think I want this?" she snapped, her voice rising. "Do you think I spent years loving you just to walk away like it meant nothing? I have to do this, Noah. Because I can't spend another second being with someone who destroyed my trust." His expression softened, just for a second. "We can fix this." A bitter laugh escaped her. "You don’t get it, do you? There’s nothing left to fix." Noah stood abruptly, pushing his chair back with a scrape. "That’s not true." He ran a hand through his hair, pacing like he was trying to outrun his own thoughts. "We can go to therapy. We can take time apart, just not like this. We can fight for us, Anna." His voice cracked on her name, and something deep inside her nearly caved. But she couldn’t let him pull her back in. Not again. She inhaled sharply. "I was fighting, Noah. For years, I fought for this marriage while you were off lying to me, sneaking around, making me feel like I was losing my mind. But I see clearly now. And I see that I deserve better." His hands curled into fists at his sides. "You think walking away makes you better than me?" "No," she whispered. "It just makes me free." Silence stretched between them. Noah’s shoulders sank. For the first time, he looked defeated. "Anna," he said, his voice quieter, rougher. "I love you." She closed her eyes for a brief second, letting the words settle over her like a final blow. Then she opened them and met his gaze, steady and unwavering. "Love isn’t enough," she said. Something inside him seemed to break. The fight drained from his body, and after a long, painful moment, he reached for the pen. Anna watched as he signed his name, each stroke of ink carving a permanent scar into both of their lives. When he finally pushed the papers back to her, he met her eyes with a mixture of heartbreak and anger. "You want a divorce?" His voice was hollow. "Fine. You win." Anna nodded, her throat burning. She gathered the papers, stood up, and walked to the door. She hesitated for a split second, waiting,hoping-he’d say something to change her mind. But he didn’t. So she walked out. And this time, Noah didn’t try to stop her.
