The Hunt Begins
Kieran’s POV
"I'm not yours, Lucian."
His sigh pushes off the wall. Not sure, but you may be. He approaches closely, tilts his head. "Remember, Kieran turned away from you. He wanted no one. But me?" His hand raises to sweep a hair strand from her face. "I would never exclude you, Selene."
Before I can stop it, a terrible snarl escapes from my chest.
Selene's head swings wide towards the window.
Lucian gives a smile.
" took you long enough, Alpha."
I save time without wasting any.
I blast out through the door, wood splinters all around.
Selene gasps.
Lucian moves hard.
"Last but not least," he says. "I was beginning to doubt you would show up."
I silence myself.
I jump.
Lucian dodges, swift as lightning, spinning away just as my claws cut through the air where his throat was so recently visible.
"Tsk, tsk," he says teasing. "Kieran, you're predictable. always so fast to strike."
I twirl as my breathing is erratic.
Selene pushes herself against the wall and watches us wide-eyed.
"Let her go," I spat out.
Lucian looks up. Get me.
I do not hesitate.
I feel.
We smash to the ground, breaking the hardwood floor.
I don't feel Lucian's claws digging into my shoulder.
All I am experiencing is wrath.
All I can see is crimson.
" SHE's mine!" I yell and bang my fist into his jaw.
Lucian chuckles across the blood line.
She never belonged to you, Kieran. You handed her up. recall?"
That one strikes right in depth.
I flutter for a short second.
Lucian grabs hold and twists us over, slams me on my back.
His claws on my throat, he hisses, "you don't deserve her." "You're too damaged." Too frail.
My wolf fights for control by snarling.
However—then—
halt!
Her voice cuts through the anarchy.
We both stop.
She is standing over us, her blue eyes flaming with wrath, her chest heaving.
"Enough," she says, inhaling. "I will not be a prize you fight over."
Lucian smiles and lets his hold on me slack.
"See, Alpha?" asked. He stands, brushing off his clothing. She knows you're not worth it, too.
Selene looks squarely at me, her eyes stern.
"You have to depart, Kieran."
My heart quiets down.
"What??" My voice hardly whispers at all.
"Guide." She straightens her chin. "You don't get to claim me right now."
I start to push to my feet, my fists closing. "Selene, please do not do this."
She withdraws.
apart from me.
To him.
Lucian's smile became more pronounced.
"It looks like she made her decision."
I get something inside of me breaking.
Not at all.
I will stop this from happening.
I forward one step.
But then, prior to my response—
Lucian moves with lightning's quick speed.
He grips the wrist of Selene—
Then tosses something at my feet.
A silver powder burns my flesh and blinds my eyes as it shoots skyward.
I let out a shout and staggered back.
When the smoke passes—
They are no longer here.
I stand there devastated, shocked, angry.
Selene is missing.
Lucian scooped her. Once again.
Nonetheless, this time...
I shall search them to the farthest points of the world this time.
Nobody picks up what is mine.
And life itself.
"You might fight it all you wish, Selene."
Lucian's voice is a sinister whisper in my ear that shivers me from disgust down my spine.
But the reality is known by you and me both.
My heart hammering, I turn abruptly, wrenching my wrist from his hold.
"The truth?!"?" I hiss and glare at him. "the only truth here is that you abducted Lucian!"
His lips open to a smile, eyes shining with laughter.
"Love, Kidnap" is such a terrible term. I just... recovered what had been given up.
My chest stiffens.
That word touches more deeply than I would want to acknowledge.
Lucian tilts his head and watches me with that annoying conceit. "Kieran turned you down, didn't he? Tucked you aside like a mistake.
My breath is unsteady and my nails sink into my hands.
That he is exploiting my suffering against me bothers me. Turn it around. Working on it.
"He…" I despise myself for the uncertainty as my voice freezes.
Lucian approaches, his shadow hanging over everything.
"Selene, he decided upon something. And now it's time for you.
I looked up, my wolf growling within me.
And you believe my choice is you?" I snidely chuckle. "I would sooner rip my own heart out."
Lucian laughs, his fingertips caressing my cheek before I slap them away.
"Fiery as always," he muses. "But shortly you'll notice... It is me that has been here consistently. Kieron? He won never pick you. not quite."
I open my mouth to counter.
However, then a sound.
My heart stops.
Low, deep, dangerous; a growl fits the air.
Lucian stiffens; his eyes tighten as he whirls towards the entrance.
I heard a snarl.
Anywhere would be familiar to me.
Subsequently, the door lets out an explosive.
And he is there as well.
Kierann.
Standing in the doorway, his chest heaving with anger, his eyes blaze gold.
I stop to gather my breath.
I never had seen him like this.
Wild, unhung and horrible.
Kieran growls, steps inside, "and I'll rip your throat out," then "touch her again."
Lucian exhales, seeming bored, yet I can sense strain in his jaw.
You always arrive too late, Alpha thinks.
Eyes dart to me from Kieran.
They seem to me to contain everything—
Passion. Deservation. Something else, something he will not identify.
My heart leaps against my ribs.
But Lucian moves and all breaks down.
Lucian replies gently, moving behind me as his fingers follow down my arm: "She's not yours to claim anymore."
Kieran launches.
I hardly have time to act before the room bursts in anarchy.
Kieran runs into Lucian; their bodies crash against the wall with enough power to split the wood.
Lucian snarls; his claws show, but Kieran moves faster.
Breaking furniture in his way, he tosses Lucian across the room.
Blood spills over the floor.
Lucian cleans his mouth, his smile wavers for the first time.
"You're losing control, Alpha," he mocks.
"All for a mate who will never be yours."
Kieran's chest heaves, his eyes black and wild.
She was always mine, he says.
The words have a shockwave effect.
Kieran looks at me then, his face tense with an unadulterated feeling.
Ask Selene to come with me.
Lucian shook his head and laughed. "You believe she will simply leave with you?"
Kieran does not blink at all.
"I do not think," he says. " I know."
And then he stares at me.
His eye fixes on mine, and for a moment all else vanishes.
Just us.
Just the link dragging us together, blazing more than ever.
Though Lucian is speaking, I cannot hear him.
I hear just my own pulse, hammering in my ears.
Kieran steps nearer, his voice low, harsh, full of unsaid pledges.
"Say the word, Selene; I'll tear him apart."
Lucian stiffens right next to me.
Still, I am unable to move.
I find it difficult to breathe.
Because the fact is—
I have no idea what I want now.
When Kieran turned aside, Lucian saved me.
Kieran is here right now, though.
Advocating for me.
For the first time, defending us.
My
throat tightens.
"Selene," Kieran says once more, quieter this time. "Please.
Lucian's hand gets firm around my wrist.
I sense myself caught between them.
two forces.
Two storms here.
Both ready to wipe off the planet in order to possess me.
And I'm not sure whether I would survive it.
