A Kiss of Deception Selene's POV Lucian gives her cheek a false tender kiss. "Come silently, sweetheart. Maybe I slashed his throat. Her breath shivers. She fixes her gaze on me. She had tears shining in her eyes. And finally, she acknowledged. "No!" I have a terrible voice, desperate. "Don't" She turns to Lucian once again. "I shall accompany you. Just avoid hurting him." Lucian's smile became more pronounced. "Smart girlfriend." Before the darkness, the last thing I hear is her quiet apology? "Don't interact with me." Lucian pulls me across the poorly lighted hall and grips my arm tightly. "You don't get to demand, Selene," he says, his voice a combination of threat and amusement. I push my heels into the stone floor yanking at his grasp. "You found what you were looking for. Allow me to go now! Lucian quickly, his fingers latching around my throat. Though his claws press against my flesh, his touch is just barely kind. Let you go, please. His lips curve into a smile. "Oh, sweetheart, we're just starting." As I look into his cool, golden eyes, my pulse pounds. "Kieran will arrive for me." Though my heart hurts with doubt, my voice is firm. Lucian lets out a laugh. Not if his death is certain. Slice across me like a blade, the words. Not exactly. He is dishonest. He is absolutely necessary. I still sense Kieran—our link, our tie. "You're bluffing," I whisper. Lucian approaches closely, his breath ghosting across my cheek. As right. for now. I flex my hands. Lucian will not win. His smile only gets more pronounced. Still, I already have. Once more, he drags me forward; this time, I do not object. Since I have to keep living. About Kieran. For us as well. The temperature in the chamber Lucian locks me in is less than ice. Silver shackles abound on the walls, their faint but threatening radiance. As he shuts the door, I back off and hear the latch clicking across the hall. "Rest well, Selene," he says easily. "Your strength will be required." I keep quiet. I'm not responsive. The second he left; I rushed to the window. Bars. Of course. I breathe hard, my wolf pace within me guiding me. Kiera. Where are you now? I close my eyes, reaching out to our relationship with pain and darkness. Then, though a pulse, faint and weak but alive. Tears stain my eyes. Keep on, Kieran. I'll figure out an escape. I get shivers running down my back. Knowing one thing for sure—helps me to make decisions. Lucian is not keeping me alive out of charity. He has a scheme in mind. And I sense I won't enjoy it. Years go by. My arms over my knees, I sit on the chilly floor. The door groans open. Lucian steps in with a silver goblet. " You have to be thirsty." I shoot him a look. "I would much rather starve." He sighs, laying the goblet on a little table. You constantly make things so complicated. I refuse to reply. He moves in front of me closer, bending. "Tell me, Selene. Why do you suppose you are still alive?" I start to swallow. "because you need something from me." His eyes radiate acceptance. "Smart girl." I remain still. He moves his head. "I am looking for an heir. My gut sinks. "Who?" My voice is hardly above a whisper. Lucian leans back with a smile. "My pack won't follow me permanently without one. And nobody else could carry my blood more suited than you?" Churns of disgust sweep into me. "I would rather die." Lucian tuts and shakes his head. "Don't be so theatrical." Really, it is a straightforward proposition. Give me an heir; I will spare Kieran's life. My heart leaps against my ribs. You are lying. "Am I?" asks His eyes go right through me. "You sensed his suffering, did not you? How feeble he's gotten? Tears my eyes. You monster, indeed. Lucian sighs, gets to his feet. "Think it over, Selene." But take no more than a reasonable time. He turns to go. “Wait!" He stops and turns around. My mouth closes tightly. He waits with a brow raised. I will myself start to breathe. " Let me see him first." Lucian leans back with a smile. " NOW, that wouldn't be any fun, would it?" And he goes, closing the door behind him. I exhaled shakily, my entire body quivering. Lucian wants to break through here. Not at all. Still, the more time I spend here. The more difficult resistance will be. I hardly got any sleep that evening. My thoughts fly. Looking for a means of escape. Next, a tone, soft and faint. I straighten myself to try to hear. Then I start to hear it. My heart shuts. I head straight for the bars. In the black, a shadow moves. I stop to gather my breath. "Kierán?" Though feeble, his voice is resolved. "We're coming for you." Tears find their way down my face. Hurry. Not knowing how much longer I could hang on. "You shouldn’t be here." Selene speaks with a whisper of yearning and terror. My breath ragged, I held the cold iron bars of her jail. "Did you truly think I wouldn't come for you?" She shakes her head, tears shining in her eyes unshed. "You just do not comprehend, Kieran. She—" "He is dead if he touches you once more." My wolf calls are barely controlled inside me. Her eyes darted with something—hope, relief, uncertainty. "Lucian won't let me go that readily." I sneer. "Then we make him." But the familiar smell of death and power slinks through the air before I can speak another word. Selene's eyes go wide. Kieran, run!" Late too late. The door lets forth a blast. And Lucian enters as well. He lets a deliberate, leisurely smile sweep his face. Well, well. Look who entered my trap straightforwardly. Lucian's guards surround me in seconds, their glittering guns shining in the low torchlight. Selene extends her arm to me. "Kieran, avoid battling them!" I have blood boils. "I'm not walking off without you." Lucian starts to laugh. "How ideal. But I'll shatter her right in front of you if you so greatly raise a finger." From my chest comes a deep, terrible growl. "Touch hers, and I'll rip your heart out." Lucian tilted his head. " Such a nasty thing, aren't you? But let us address like civilised men, will we?" I show my fangs here. "I have nothing to offer you." He looks at Selene and dismisses me. Tell him, honey. Selene's shoulders get tight. "Lucian—don’t." He nods with a smile. "Oh, I would." His golden eyes shone. " Tell him our little deal." My pulse freezes. Selene shuts her eyes, her lips separating as though the words physically hurt her. "He... wants an heir." Red becomes blurry in my eyesight. "You think I would ever let that happen?" Lucian's smile became more pronounced. Alpha, you have no option. I lunge, but the silver chains my flesh as they lash around me. Selene lets out a yell. "Stop! Please!" Lucian chucks her chin, making her turn to face me. "Choose,Selene." His voice is silk fringed with poison. Kieran dies... or you give me what I want. Selene's chest moves quickly both up and down. "Don't hear him!" I holler. Her eyes broken with suffering, she glances at me. "Kierán..." She is hesitant, I see it. The terror; the unattainable decision. Lucian laughed. "Oh, this is intriguing." I doubt it. I change. My body screaming in anguish, silver sears into my flesh as I rip free from the bonds. But I don't give a damn. Lucian is within reach—because And I smash my hand into his face. Lucian stumbles back with blood pouring from his mouth. His smile quotes for the first time. "You shouldn't have done that," he says, hissing. I give him little time to heal. I scoop Selene behind me and shove. "Stay near." The security guards enter. I bring them down all around. As I rip through them, my wolf released, the air is filled with blood and wrath. Selene lets out gas as I split the final one. Lucian counts, his golden eyes darkening. "Impressive," he says thoughtfully. "But not enough," said He stretches. I block, but right now he's speedier than usual. More powerful. Selene yells as his claws sloppily cut over my chest. I start to hurt fiercely. I ground myself, my eyesight whirling. Selene leaps to meet me, but Lucian catches her waist. "Games." His voice sounds as dark as a snarl. " You're mine now." Selene battles and weeps. None! Allow me to depart! My body is still not moving. I am bleeding far too much. Not…not like this. Lucian raises her with ease and heads towards the entrance. The eyes of Selene locate mine. "Kieran." The door closes strongly. She is no more here. And I fall short as well.
