A new path

Stephanie stood frozen in the yard, her hand pressed against the fresh mark on her neck. The spot tingled with warmth that spread through her whole body. It felt nothing like the weak, uncertain feeling she had with Lucian. This was strong. Real. Her heart raced as she looked up at the tall man in front of her. Darien Blackthorn. The Alpha’s son. Everyone knew his name. Stories painted him as cold and dangerous, the strongest wolf who made enemies run just by showing up. And now he stood here, silver eyes locked on her with a softness she never expected. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly. His deep voice was gentle, almost careful. She nodded slowly, still trying to catch her breath. “I… I don’t understand. Why me?” Darien glanced at her family on the porch. Uncle Harlan looked pale and angry. Lila’s face twisted with jealousy, while Marcus and Theo shifted uncomfortably. The air felt thick with shock. “You don’t have to understand everything right now,” Darien said. He kept his hand light on her arm, like he was afraid she might break. “But you’re not staying here anymore. Pack your things. I’m taking you home with me.” Lila stepped forward, unable to stay quiet. “Home with you? The devil himself? She probably threw herself at you the same way she tried with Lucian. Pathetic. You’ll get tired of her soon enough.” Marcus laughed nervously. “Yeah. She’s nothing special. Just an outcast who brings bad luck.” Darien’s silver eyes turned cold as he looked at them. His tall frame seemed even bigger. Power rolled off him in waves. “Speak about my mate like that again,” he said, his voice low and steady, “and you will answer to me. She is no longer your concern.” The family went silent. Uncle Harlan pulled Lila back, muttering something under his breath. Stephanie felt a strange mix of fear and relief. No one had ever defended her like this. She hurried inside the cabin on shaky legs. The attic space was small and dusty. She gathered her few belongings — two old dresses, a thin blanket, and the small wooden carving her mother had given her years ago. It took only minutes. When she came back down, Darien waited by the edge of the yard. He looked at her small bundle and frowned softly. “You won’t need much of that,” he said. “But bring it if it matters to you.” They started walking. Darien led her through the trees toward a path she had never taken. His black truck waited a short distance away. He opened the passenger door for her, something no one had ever done. Stephanie climbed in, still feeling like this was a dream she might wake from any second. The drive was quiet at first. Trees passed by the windows. Darien kept one hand on the wheel, the other resting near her seat. He didn’t push her to talk, but after a while, he spoke. “I’ve seen you before,” he admitted. “Working hard when others didn’t. You never gave up. That strength… it caught my attention.” Stephanie turned to look at him. Up close, he was even more striking. The sharp lines of his face, the way his silver eyes caught the light, the muscles in his arms. He looked like someone from the stories — powerful, handsome, and a little scary. But right now, he seemed focused only on her. “I didn’t know anyone was watching,” she said softly. “I thought I was alone.” “You’re not alone anymore.” His voice was firm. “Things will be different at the mansion. My family will meet you. They might be surprised, but they will accept you. And I will make sure of it.” The mansion came into view after a long drive. Tall stone walls rose up between the trees, with warm lights glowing in the windows. It looked like a fortress, strong and beautiful. Guards at the gate bowed quickly when they saw Darien. The truck stopped in front of the wide steps. Alpha Thorne and Luna Elara waited outside with a younger man who looked like Darien — probably his brother Damien. They stared as Darien helped Stephanie out of the truck. “Son,” Alpha Thorne said, voice heavy with surprise. “You went to the ceremony after all?” “Not exactly,” Darien replied. He kept his arm around Stephanie’s shoulders. “This is Stephanie. My mate. I claimed her today.” Luna Elara’s eyes widened, but she stepped forward with a warm smile. “Welcome, Stephanie. This is unexpected, but you are part of our family now. Come inside. You must be tired.” Damien grinned. “Bold move, brother. Father has been pushing you for months.” They led her into the huge home. Soft rugs covered the floors. Beautiful wooden furniture filled the rooms. Everything smelled clean and rich. Stephanie felt small and out of place in her old dress, but Darien stayed close. He showed her to his large suite on the upper floor. The room was bigger than her uncle’s whole cabin. A wide bed sat against one wall. A balcony overlooked the forests. Darien set her small bundle down carefully. “You can have this space,” he said. “We will share for now, to let the bond settle. But if you want your own room, I can arrange it.” Stephanie touched the mark on her neck again. It still felt warm. “This is all happening so fast. I was just… rejected this morning. And now I’m here with you.” Darien sat on the edge of the bed, leaving space for her. “I know. I should have stepped forward sooner. Watching you from afar was wrong, but I didn’t know how to approach. You deserve better than what you had. I want to give you that.” He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. His touch was surprisingly soft for someone so strong. Stephanie felt her cheeks warm. No one had ever looked at her like this — like she mattered. That evening, the family ate together in a big dining hall. Servants brought plates of hot food — roasted meat, fresh bread, and vegetables. Stephanie ate slowly, still shy. Luna Elara asked gentle questions about her life, while Alpha Thorne watched with careful eyes. Later, back in the suite, Darien showed her the bathroom and brought her clean, soft clothes. “Rest tonight,” he said. “Tomorrow we can talk more. Walk the lands. Whatever you want.” As she changed and lay down on the huge bed, Darien stayed on the other side, giving her space. But he reached over and took her hand. “You’re safe here, Stephanie. I promise.” She squeezed his hand back. For the first time in years, the weight on her chest felt a little lighter. Sleep came slowly, filled with new hopes and questions. But in the middle of the night, a knock sounded on the suite door. Darien got up quietly. Stephanie heard low voices outside — one of the guards speaking urgently. When Darien returned, his face looked serious. “There’s movement near the southern borders. Silverfang Pack is asking for help again. Rogues might be testing the area.” He looked at her, protective instinct clear in his silver eyes. “I may need to check it soon. But I don’t want to leave you alone yet.” Stephanie sat up. The new bond pulled at her. She didn’t want him to go either. But trouble was already coming close to their fresh start.
