First morning

Sunlight streamed through the big windows of the suite the next morning. Stephanie woke up slowly, blinking at the soft blankets around her. For a moment, she thought she was still in the cold attic at her uncle’s cabin. Then she felt the warm hand resting lightly on her waist and remembered everything. Darien lay beside her, already awake. His silver eyes watched her with quiet care. He looked even bigger in the daylight, with his jet-black hair messy from sleep and his strong chest rising and falling steadily. But he didn’t move closer or push. He just stayed there, giving her space. “Good morning,” he said softly. His voice was deep but gentle. “Did you sleep okay?” Stephanie nodded, sitting up a little. The mark on her neck still tingled warmly. “Better than I have in a long time. This bed is so soft. Everything here feels… different.” Darien smiled a small smile. It changed his whole face, making the sharp lines look less scary. “You’ll get used to it. This is your home now. No more early chores or cold rooms. Today, I want to show you around slowly. No rush.” He got up first and brought her a tray with warm bread, fruit, and tea. Stephanie ate slowly, still shy. No one had ever brought her breakfast before. Darien sat across from her, drinking his own tea and answering her quiet questions about the mansion. He told her about the training fields, the gardens, and the forest paths he liked to run on in wolf form. After they finished, he handed her some new clothes — a simple but pretty blue dress that felt soft against her skin. “The maids brought these for you. If you don’t like them, we can get more.” They left the suite together. Darien kept his hand near her back, not touching unless she seemed okay with it. They walked through the wide halls first. Servants bowed when they passed. Some looked surprised to see the Alpha’s son with a new girl, but no one said anything rude. Luna Elara met them in the main sitting room. She hugged Stephanie warmly. “You look much more rested today. Come, let me show you the gardens. Darien can join us after he speaks with his father.” The gardens were beautiful. Flowers grew in bright colors, and small paths wound between trees. Luna Elara talked kindly about pack life and asked about Stephanie’s favorite things. For the first time, Stephanie felt like she could speak without fear of being mocked. When Darien joined them later, he took her hand. They walked a quiet path alone. “My wolf feels calmer with you here,” he admitted. “I’ve fought many battles and led training for years, but this feels new. Good.” Stephanie looked up at him. “You’re not like the stories say. Everyone calls you the devil or the beast. But you’re… kind to me.” Darien stopped walking and turned to face her. His silver eyes held hers. “The stories keep the pack safe and strong. I have to be hard sometimes. But with you, I don’t want to be that way. I want you to feel safe. Wanted.” He lifted her hand and kissed the back of it gently. The touch sent a small spark through her. They spent the rest of the morning exploring. Darien showed her a hidden meadow where wildflowers grew tall. He picked one and tucked it behind her ear, his fingers brushing her cheek. Stephanie’s face warmed. No one had ever touched her like this — like she was something precious. Back at the mansion for lunch, Damien joined them at the table. He teased his brother lightly. “Never thought I’d see you acting so soft, Darien. She must be special.” Darien just shrugged, but his hand stayed close to Stephanie’s on the table. Alpha Thorne watched everything quietly. He seemed pleased but serious. “The bond is fresh. Take time to let it grow. But remember your duties too, son. The southern borders need watching.” After lunch, Darien took Stephanie to a private training area nearby. He didn’t push her to fight. Instead, he showed her simple ways to stand stronger and block a light push. “You’ve been strong for years on your own,” he said. “Now you can learn to protect yourself even better. I’ll always be there, but I like seeing you grow.” Stephanie tried the moves. She was clumsy at first, but Darien praised her small wins. Each time she got something right, he smiled and touched her shoulder or waist lightly. The bond between them felt warmer, pulling them closer with every hour. As the sun started to lower, they sat on a bench overlooking the valley. Darien told her a little about his younger days — tough training with his father, battles against rogues, and the weight of being the future Alpha. Stephanie shared pieces of her hard life with her uncle. He listened without interrupting, his jaw tight when she mentioned the bruises. “You won’t go through that again,” he promised. “You’re my Luna now. My most important person.” Stephanie felt her chest lighten. She leaned against his strong arm just a little. The feelings were growing fast. This powerful man who everyone feared was turning out to be the gentle mate she had always wanted. But as they walked back toward the mansion, a scout came running up. He bowed quickly to Darien. “Alpha heir, the Silverfang Pack sent another message. Rogues attacked their outer camp last night. They’re asking for warriors. It looks more serious than before.” Darien’s body tensed. He looked at Stephanie, worry in his silver eyes. “I may need to handle this soon. I don’t like leaving you so early, but the pack alliance matters.” Stephanie squeezed his hand. “I understand. Just… be careful.” They continued inside, but the easy mood had shifted. That evening, after a quiet dinner, Darien held her close on the balcony as the stars came out. His arms felt safe around her. He kissed the top of her head softly, then her temple, then lightly on the lips. The kiss was slow and careful, full of new warmth. Stephanie kissed him back, her hands resting on his broad chest. The bond hummed between them, making everything feel brighter. Later that night, as they lay in bed, another knock came at the door. This one sounded more urgent. Darien got up and stepped outside to speak with the guard. When he returned, his face was serious. “The rogues crossed closer to our lands,” he said. “A small group was spotted near the southern edge tonight. I have to go check it myself before it gets worse.” He dressed quickly, pulling on a dark shirt that showed his strong arms. Before he left, he leaned down and kissed Stephanie again. “Stay inside the mansion. I’ll be back before dawn. You’re safe here.” Stephanie nodded, but worry twisted in her stomach as she watched him go. The door closed behind him, leaving the big suite feeling suddenly empty. She tried to sleep, but every small sound outside made her tense. The new bond made her miss him already. Hours passed slowly. Then, close to midnight, she heard distant howls from the forest. They sounded angry. Fighting. Stephanie sat up fast, heart pounding. Something was wrong out there.
