The long night

Stephanie stood on the balcony for what felt like hours. The cool night air brushed against her skin, but she barely felt it. Her eyes stayed fixed on the dark tree line where Darien had disappeared with the warriors. The distant howls had stopped, but the silence felt even worse. Every small sound made her heart jump. She wrapped her arms around herself and touched the mark on her neck. The bond was still new, but she could feel a faint pull — like a warm thread connecting her to him. It gave her a little comfort, but worry still sat heavy in her chest. What if the rogues were stronger than they thought? What if he got hurt because he was rushing back to her? Luna Elara had told her these feelings were normal for new mates, but that didn’t make the waiting easier. Stephanie went back inside and tried to rest on the big bed. She curled up on Darien’s side again, breathing in his scent from the pillow. Sleep came in short bursts, filled with dreams of silver eyes and fighting wolves. Sometime deep in the night, the door opened softly. Stephanie sat up fast, heart pounding. Darien stepped inside, moving quietly. His dark shirt was torn in places, and there was dirt and a little blood on his arms. But he was standing strong. His silver eyes found her immediately. “You’re back,” she whispered, relief flooding through her. Darien closed the door and came straight to the bed. He sat down carefully, like he didn’t want to scare her. “I’m sorry it took so long. The fight was a bit bigger than we expected. A group of rogues tried to break through the southern line.” Stephanie moved closer without thinking. She reached out and gently touched a cut on his forearm. “You’re hurt.” “It’s nothing,” he said softly. “Just scratches. I’ve had much worse.” He caught her hand and held it. His touch was warm and steady. “But knowing you were here waiting for me… it made me careful. I didn’t want to make you worry.” He stood up and went to clean up quickly in the bathroom. When he came back, he wore a clean shirt. He looked tired but relieved to be with her. Stephanie made room for him on the bed. Darien lay down and pulled her gently into his arms. His big body curled around hers protectively. “Tell me what happened,” she said quietly, resting her head on his chest. Darien stroked her hair slowly as he spoke. “The Silverfang Pack lost some supplies in the last attack. The rogues are getting bolder. We pushed them back tonight, but I think they’re testing our strength. I’ll have to send more warriors south soon.” Stephanie listened carefully. She liked that he talked to her about these things instead of hiding them. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Darien smiled a little in the dark. “Just being here helps. Your ideas about sharing herbs with Silverfang earlier were good. We can talk more about that tomorrow.” He kissed the top of her head. “You’re already thinking like a Luna.” They stayed wrapped together for a long time. The bond felt warmer, stronger. Darien’s hand moved slowly up and down her back in soothing strokes. Stephanie felt safe in a way she had never known. This powerful man, feared by everyone, held her like she was the most important thing in his world. “You’re not what people say,” she whispered. “They call you the devil. The beast. But with me… you’re kind.” Darien was quiet for a moment. “I have to be hard for the pack. It keeps everyone safe. But you bring out a different side of me. I want to protect you. I want to make you happy.” His voice dropped lower. “I’ve wanted that since I first saw you working so hard in the outer lands.” Stephanie lifted her head to look at him. In the soft moonlight, his handsome face looked peaceful. She leaned in and kissed him. The kiss started slow and sweet, but it grew warmer. Darien kissed her back with careful hunger, one hand cupping her face gently. When they pulled apart, both were breathing faster. “We can go slow,” he reminded her, his silver eyes searching hers. “I don’t want to rush you.” “I know,” she said. “But I like being close to you.” They talked more as the sky began to lighten. Darien told her small stories about growing up in the mansion — tough training days with his father, playful fights with Damien, and quiet moments with his mother. Stephanie shared more about her parents and the few happy memories she still held onto. Morning came gently. Darien ordered breakfast to the room again. They ate fresh fruit, warm eggs, and bread on the balcony. The sun made the forests look beautiful. Darien watched her with soft eyes, reaching over to brush crumbs from her lip with his thumb. The small touch made her heart flutter. After breakfast, they joined the family downstairs. Alpha Thorne looked serious as he discussed the border situation with Darien. Luna Elara pulled Stephanie aside and gave her more clothes and a beautiful shawl. Damien teased his brother again, but he also smiled at Stephanie and said, “You’re good for him. He smiles more now.” The day passed in a calm rhythm. Darien took her back to the training clearing and continued teaching her basic moves. He was patient, praising her when she got a block right. In the afternoon, they walked through the gardens. He picked more flowers for her and listened as she talked about ideas for helping the Silverfang Pack. As evening came, they sat by the stream again. Darien held her hand and told her how proud he was of her strength. “You went from that hard life to standing here with me. You’re amazing, Stephanie.” His words made her eyes sting with happy tears. She leaned against his strong shoulder. The bond between them felt deeper with every hour. But as they walked back to the mansion, a scout arrived with new news. His face was tense. “Alpha heir, the rogues attacked again. This time they took three Silverfang wolves hostage. They’re demanding supplies or they’ll start killing them.” Darien’s body went tight. He looked at Stephanie, his silver eyes dark with worry. “I have to handle this. It’s getting more serious.” Stephanie nodded, but fear twisted inside her. The threats were coming closer. Their new life together already faced real danger. That night, as Darien prepared to leave again with more warriors, he pulled her close and kissed her deeply. “Stay safe. I’ll return as fast as I can.” She watched him shift into his massive black wolf and disappear into the trees once more. The mansion felt empty again. Stephanie stood on the balcony, praying quietly. Hours later, while the moon hung high, a loud crash echoed from the outer walls. Guards shouted. Stephanie’s heart raced as she heard fighting sounds much closer than before. Something — or someone — had broken through the mansion’s defenses.
