Standing together

916 Words
The howls from the eastern side of the mansion grounds lasted for nearly an hour. Stephanie stood by the window in their suite, heart pounding as she listened. Guards shouted orders. Wolves growled in the distance. She hated feeling helpless while Darien was out there fighting. Luna Elara came to stay with her. “He’ll be fine,” she said calmly. “Darien is the strongest for a reason. But I understand the worry. I feel it every time Thorne leaves too.” The words helped a little. Stephanie paced until the sounds of fighting finally died down. When the door opened later, Darien stepped in. He had a few new cuts on his arms, but he looked steady. His silver eyes found her immediately. “They’re gone,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “We pushed them back. No serious injuries on our side.” Stephanie hugged him tight, breathing in his scent. “I was scared for you.” Darien kissed the top of her head. “I know. But I’m here.” He held her for a long time before cleaning up. When he returned, they sat on the bed together. He told her about the attack — how the rogues seemed more coordinated than before. “They’re testing our defenses,” he said. “But we won’t let them break through again.” The rest of the day was busy. Darien met with his father and the warriors to plan the next moves. Stephanie helped Luna Elara organize supplies for the Silverfang trip. She felt useful, and it kept her mind from worrying too much. In the afternoon, Darien found her in the gardens. He took her hand and led her to a quiet meadow they had visited before. The wildflowers swayed in the gentle breeze. They sat on the soft grass, and Darien pulled her close. “I don’t like sending you to Silverfang,” he admitted. “But I’m proud that you want to go. You’re not the same person who lived with your uncle. You’re strong now.” Stephanie leaned against his broad chest. “I feel stronger because of you. You make me believe I can do this.” Darien tilted her chin up and kissed her. The kiss was slow and full of feeling. His hands moved gently over her back, pulling her closer. The bond hummed warmly between them. For a while, the world outside the meadow disappeared. They made love there in the soft grass, under the open sky. Darien was tender and adoring, touching her like she was the most precious thing in his life. He kissed every part of her, whispering how beautiful she was, how much he needed her. Stephanie gave herself to him completely, the pleasure building until they both found release together. Afterward, he held her in his arms, stroking her hair as they caught their breath. “You’re my everything,” he murmured. “No rogue will take you from me.” They stayed in the meadow until the sun started to lower. On the walk back, Darien kept her hand in his. “Tomorrow you leave for Silverfang with a protected group. I’ll send my best warriors with you. Stay close to them.” Stephanie nodded. “I will. And you’ll be careful with the rogue camp?” “Always,” he promised. That evening, the family ate together. The mood was serious but determined. Alpha Thorne gave final instructions for both missions. Damien would stay at the mansion to guard it. Luna Elara gave Stephanie a small pouch of healing herbs. “Use these if needed. And come back safely.” After dinner, Stephanie and Darien returned to their suite. They spent the night close together, talking about small things and holding each other. The bond felt deep and comforting. Darien made love to her again before sleep — slow, gentle, and full of quiet promises. His powerful body moved with care, making her feel treasured and safe. When morning came, they dressed and went downstairs. The group for Silverfang was ready — ten strong warriors plus healers. Darien hugged her tightly before she left. “Come back to me,” he said, his silver eyes serious. “I will,” she replied. The journey to Silverfang took most of the day. The forest paths were quiet, but everyone stayed alert. Stephanie rode in the middle of the group, feeling both nervous and determined. When they arrived at the Silverfang camp, their alpha welcomed them warmly. “Thank you for coming,” he said. “Your help means everything right now.” Stephanie worked with the healers, distributing supplies and learning about their needs. The wolves there looked tired but grateful. She felt good helping, even in a small way. The bond with Darien stayed warm in her chest, letting her know he was okay. That night, as she rested in a simple guest tent, a scout ran into the camp. “Rogues were spotted nearby! They’re heading this way!” The Silverfang warriors prepared to fight. Stephanie stood up, heart racing. She gripped the small knife she had brought and remembered Darien’s training. She wouldn’t hide. The sounds of fighting started at the edge of the camp. Howls filled the night air. Stephanie stayed near the healers, ready to help if needed. Then one rogue broke through the line and ran straight toward the center of the camp — toward her.
