The next morning, I woke before dawn. my mind was restless, swirling with questions about The Shade and the box Darcy found. But one thing was clear, waiting was no longer an option. Lola and Annie met me at the edge of town, their faces set with determination.
"we've got a lead", pulling out a crumpled map.
"Dr. kore's place isn't far. We can stake it out"
Annie handed me a small device.
"This tracker picks up magical signatures. If The Shade or anyone else connected shows up, we'll know"
As we approached the rundown house, the air grew colder,an unnatural chill wrapping around us. I felt the familiar tingle of my powers awakening. Suddenly,a shadow slipped from the tree line, a figure moving like smoke. The Shade had come. My heart pounded. This was no longer a distant threat. The haunt had begun.
*****************************
The shade disappeared as quickly as he'd appeared. I sprinted towards the tree, ice swirling at my fingertips. I launched a freezing gust, coating the ground behind him in a sheet of frost, but he didn't slip. He moved with purpose. like someone who'd danced with death for years. Lola and Annie chased behind me,hearts pounding. They reached the edge of the forest, only to find... nothing.
"He was just here",
I muttered,chest heaving.
"I felt him"
Annie crouched near a tree, brushing aside leaves. "He left something".
It was a card, sleek and blacks, with a single word etched in silver:
"STOP".
Lola snatched it.
"He's mocking us"
"no" I said. "He's warning us"
Later that evening,I stood alone in the backyard, letting the cool night breath turned to mist, and a soft blue glow danced across my fingertips. My powers had grown stronger, more responsive. But The Shade had still escaped. I turned to go back inside when a voice stopped me.
"you're not using your power right", said Raven, stepping out from the shadows beyond the fence.
I narrowed my eyes.
"How did you find me?"
"I never lost you", Raven replied coolly. The Shade's targeting people for a reason, and you're bait whether you like it or not".
My fingers twitched with ice.
"Relax", Raven said, raising her hands. "I'm not here to fight. I'm here to offer a trap".
I tilted my head. "A trap?"
Raven nodded. "Tomorrow night, a secret meet is going down. High level magical black market. I hacked into it. There's a whisper he'll be there". I hesitated.
"it's risky".
" that's why it might work",
Raven said. "but you'll need bait".
I looked back towards my house, thinking of my mom and Darcy, then back at Raven.
"I'm in", I said
"but if this goes wrong... it ends with fire and ice".
