Nathan looked at her with a narcissist expression, thinking of the best method to drop the bomb. He knew what he was about to say would change Rachael’s life completely.
Taking the last drag on the cigarette, he looked at her arrogantly and said with a serious tone,
“Darling, well I’m your father.”
Rachael could not believe what she just heard. Lisa told her he was dead when she was still very young, and her mother never lied to her. The thought of a stranger scattering the image and the trust she had for her mother was unbearable to her.
“You’re a liar. My dad is dead.”
She screamed at the top of her voice while Mr. James was trying to calm her down, knowing they were in a hospital. He never wanted to create a scene there
“lol… So that’s the excuse she gave you… Lisa can be so manipulative.”
Nathan’s reply was brief but piercing. He knew exactly what to stay to make her believe. He prepared himself long ago before coming back into her life; watching over her, monitoring her movements.
“You have a birthmark on your back. It’s a black dot but when you look at it closely, it has the shape of her heart. Since the day you started talking, you always made sure her dresses were arranged in order of color in your closet, from white to black. I guess you still do it.”
He followed with his usual arrogant smile. He knew only Lisa and him were aware of such private details. The birthmark was a secret they decided to keep within the family when he was still in their lives. She could not deny the fact he knew her perfectly.
´How can he be aware of such specific details? Only mom knows about it.´
She was talking loudly to herself when Mr. James held her hand, drawing her closer to him, expressing his caring nature. He could not stand her seeing her like that.
“His story is a scam, don't listen to him. He would have never left if he was your father. Your mother is in the operating room. She needs you now more than ever!”
He said while holding her small delicate head in her hands. He did not believe in Nathan’s story and wanted him to leave. But Nathan, on the other hand, was determined to stay and narrate his own side of the story. He wanted his place back in Rachael's heart and life.
“I had no choice but to leave Rachael.”
Nathan replied softly, showing a bit of emotions and sadness. His arrogant expression started fading.
“She always claimed she was the only person that was supposed to receive your love. When she saw our bond becoming stronger, she ordered me to leave, out of jealousy, threatening to kill me and manipulating you into hating me for the rest of your life.”
Nathan then walked slowly closer to Rachael, caressing her hair, persuading her to let her guard down.
“She said she’ll persuade you that I died and that I was a loving father. Going was the only way to make sure you’ll still love me. Think about it, why do you think you never met your grandparents?”
Without allowing her to talk or think, he continued talking.
“It was to make sure she’ll keep your love for her alone. I couldn't take the situation anymore. But I can’t continue my life without you. Now you are old enough to know the truth, that’s why I came back now. I know your birthday is coming up soon”
Rachael was shocked, his side of the story was adding up on one hand, explaining why she never met the other family members, but on the other side she could not believe her mother could lie to her. But her childhood dream of having a father took over her love for her mother for a second, forcing her to believe him.
She had so many questions to ask, not knowing where to start. She slowly started believing him.
“If you are really my father why did you not fight for us?”
She asked, tears dropping down her eyes. Nathan took her hands, kissed them slowly, before looking at her, trying to hold his tears.
“I wanted to sweetie. But I never wanted to be the reason why our family would have been broken. Though Lisa is very manipulative, I knew she was a great mother, and I was not wrong, look at the amazing woman you became.”
Nathan replied, while bringing her closer for a huge.
Mr. James was watching the scenario and did not believe him. Something in his story was not adding up to him.
“Rachael, honestly I think it’s best for you to wait for your mother to recover before having this conversation. You can just make a decision knowing one side of the story.”
He said skeptically, trying to convince her not to rush in her actions.
“Can I know who you are exactly?”
Nathan asked when Mr. James was done talking. Though he perfectly knew who Mr. James was after his observations, but he was just playing alone with the game.
“He’s my fiancé, we’ll soon get married.”
Rachael quickly replied. She knew the atmosphere was already tensed, and knowing Mr. James temper, the discussion could easily escalate into a fight.
The doctor came out to meet them, she brought sad news. Rachael’s anxiety immediately grew back as she saw her.
“The patient’s case is complicated, we continue with the procedure but she is in a coma and might never wake up again to be sincere with you. But I promise I’ll do my best.”
With that, the doctor turned and went back to the operating room, leaving Rachael there, broken, confused and shocked.
Will Lisa ever wake up again? Will Rachael have the chance to be told the truth from her mother’s mouth or will she just believe Nathan? And what are really the true intentions of Nathan regarding Rachael? And where will the agreement between Rachael and Mr. James lead them to?
