“Cadeon,” I say again when he doesn’t answer me. My heart is beating so fast that I’m afraid it’s going to beat right out of my chest. “Tell me the truth. What’s going on? Was it the meeting?”
Cadeon lowers his gaze. I’ve only ever seen him this serious once, and that was when we first met. This…this reaction of his makes no sense. Unless, of course, something terrible happened.
Something that kept him from keeping his promise to me.
I don’t push him further. I give him the time he needs to speak. But am I worried? Yes. I don’t think I’ve ever known this kind of fear before.
“I…” he begins before clearing his throat. “There’s been a mistake.”
