I crossed my arms.
"Then explain it."
Sally stepped forward.
"Kate, please—"
"Don't."
My voice was sharp.
She stopped.
"Don't you dare call my name like we're still friends."
Her face fell.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"Really?"
I laughed.
"Because you did a pretty good job."
My former mate looked at Sally.
Then back at me.
"There are things you don't know."
"I don't care anymore."
"You should."
I frowned.
"Why?"
He took another step closer.
"Because your rejection wasn't supposed to happen."
Everything went silent.
I stared at him.
"What?"
His eyes shifted toward the forest.
"My father forced me to reject you."
My heart stopped.
"What are you talking about?"
Sally looked nervous.
Xander's eyes narrowed.
"Why would an Alpha force his son to reject his mate?"
My former mate looked at me.
"Because of who you are."
I shook my head.
"Who I am?"
He nodded.
"Your family isn't what you think it is."
A cold feeling spread through my body.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer, another howl echoed through the forest.
This time, my wolf spoke.
Kate...
I closed my eyes.
Don't trust him.
I opened them again.
My former mate was staring at me.
"Kate, listen to me."
My wolf growled inside my head.
He is lying.
I took a step backward.
Xander immediately moved beside me.
"What did she say?"
I whispered.
"She says he's lying."
My former mate's expression changed.
And for the first time...
I saw fear in his eyes.
Xander noticed it too.
"What are you hiding?"
No one answered.
Then the ground beneath us suddenly shook.
The trees began moving violently.
Birds flew from the branches.
Sally screamed.
"What is happening?"
I heard my wolf's voice again.
But this time, she wasn't whispering.
She was roaring.
KATE! SHIFT!
I gasped.
"I can't."
You can.
"I haven't been able to feel you for days!"
Because I was protecting you.
My eyes widened.
"Protecting me from what?"
There was a pause.
Then she answered.
From them.
A terrifying growl erupted from deep within the forest.
Something was coming.
Something powerful.
Something that even the warriors around us seemed afraid of.
Xander grabbed my hand.
"Kate, whatever happens, stay with me."
I looked at him.
For the first time in days, I felt something other than pain.
I felt strength.
I felt my wolf.
And somewhere deep inside my soul...
I felt something awakening.
My eyes began to glow.
Xander stepped back.
"Kate..."
I looked down at my hands.
They were trembling.
"What is happening to me?"
My wolf whispered one final thing.
You were never meant to be an ordinary wolf.
Then everything went black.
