Amelia's eyes remained fixed on the leather folder resting on Alexander's desk.
It looked harmless.
Elegant.
Simple.
Yet she knew that once she opened it, her life would never be the same.
Alexander made no attempt to rush her.
Instead, he walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate. Beyond the glass, the late afternoon sun bathed the gardens in gold, creating a peaceful scene that stood in sharp contrast to the turmoil inside the study.
Finally, Amelia reached for the folder.
Her fingers trembled.
She opened it slowly.
The first page bore a single title.
**Marriage Agreement**
Below it were their names.
**Alexander Kingston**
**Amelia Carter**
Seeing her name beside his felt surreal.
She turned the page.
The contract was surprisingly short.
There were no hidden legal loopholes or pages of complicated language.
Instead, it contained a list of clear conditions.
**Condition One:** The marriage would remain legally valid for one year.
**Condition Two:** Amelia would continue pursuing her own career and education. She would not be expected to abandon her dreams.
**Condition Three:** Alexander would cover all medical expenses for her mother, including surgery, rehabilitation, medication, and any future treatment required during the contract period.
**Condition Four:** Neither party would interfere in the other's personal ambitions.
**Condition Five:** At the end of one year, either party could request a divorce without financial penalties.
Amelia blinked.
That was it.
She flipped through the remaining pages, expecting to find something outrageous.
There wasn't.
No demand for children.
No requirement to share a bedroom.
No clause giving Alexander control over her life.
She looked up.
"This can't be everything."
"It is."
"There has to be something else."
"There isn't."
She narrowed her eyes.
"Why would anyone write a contract this fair?"
Alexander gave a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Because I'm asking for your help, not your freedom."
His answer caught her off guard.
For the first time since arriving at the mansion, she wondered if she had judged him too quickly.
Then another question surfaced.
"If this is only for one year..."
She hesitated.
"...why do you need a wife at all?"
The smile disappeared from Alexander's face.
"There are reasons."
"What reasons?"
"I'll explain them."
"When?"
"When the time is right."
Amelia frowned.
"I don't like secrets."
"Neither do I."
"Then stop keeping them."
A shadow crossed his face.
"Some secrets don't belong to just one person."
Before Amelia could press further, a knock echoed through the study.
Mr. Harrison stepped inside.
"Sir."
Alexander turned.
"What is it?"
"A guest has arrived."
"I told everyone I wasn't receiving visitors."
Mr. Harrison looked uncomfortable.
"This guest insisted."
Alexander sighed.
"Who is it?"
"Theodore Kingston."
Alexander's expression hardened instantly.
"My uncle."
Without waiting for permission, the study doors swung open.
A man in his early sixties entered with the confidence of someone who believed every room belonged to him.
His expensive navy suit was immaculate.
His silver hair was slicked back.
A polished cane rested in one hand—not because he needed it, but because it completed the image he wished to project.
His sharp gaze landed on Amelia.
"So..."
He smiled, though there was no warmth in it.
"This must be the girl."
Amelia straightened instinctively.
Alexander stepped between them.
"What are you doing here, Uncle?"
"I heard an interesting rumor."
"There are many."
"Indeed."
Theodore's eyes drifted back to Amelia.
"I heard my nephew intends to marry a complete stranger."
Silence filled the room.
"So it's true."
Alexander folded his arms.
"My personal life isn't your concern."
"It becomes my concern when it affects the Kingston family."
Theodore slowly circled the room.
"You've spent years refusing every respectable woman introduced to you."
He stopped beside Amelia.
"And now..."
His gaze swept over her simple clothes.
"...you choose someone with nothing."
Amelia felt the sting of his words.
Before she could respond, Alexander spoke.
"That's enough."
"No."
Theodore chuckled.
"I simply find your choice... fascinating."
He looked directly at Amelia.
"Do you know what you're marrying into?"
Amelia met his gaze.
"No."
"Then allow me to enlighten you."
Alexander's voice turned cold.
"Don't."
But Theodore ignored him.
"The Kingston family owns more than businesses."
He paused deliberately.
"It owns enemies."
The room fell silent.
"People have spent decades trying to destroy this family."
His eyes settled on Amelia.
"And if you marry Alexander..."
He smiled again.
"...they'll come after you too."
Amelia's heartbeat quickened.
She looked toward Alexander.
He didn't deny it.
Not even once.
Instead, he quietly said,
"I intended to tell you."
Theodore laughed.
"Eventually."
He adjusted his cufflinks before heading toward the door.
"Oh, one more thing."
He glanced over his shoulder.
"If she refuses to marry you..."
His smile widened.
"...the board will finally have what it needs to remove you as CEO."
The door closed behind him.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Amelia slowly turned back to Alexander.
"What did he mean?"
Alexander remained still.
Then, after a long pause, he answered with the truth.
"My marriage isn't just personal."
He met her eyes.
"It's the only thing standing between me..."
"...and losing everything."
