“Of course Mama, you'll still need help around the house. And we don't live that far from you. We'll be over so often you'll be sick of us.” I try to lighten the mood.

Owen and I prepared for winter over the next week. Stopping by my Mama's twice a week so I could help with the deliveries and so we could get extra supplies. Owen seemed preoccupied with something and kept sniffing and smelling me. I wasn't bothered by it at first but then it became annoying.

We were sitting on the sofa when he leaned over and sniffed me for the umpteenth time that day. “Will you stop smelling me! What is your problem?” I looked at him confused and irritated. Did I smell bad or something?

“It's your heat. It should be coming soon but my bear and I can't smell it. We should be able to. The closer it is, the stronger the smell. It's been over a week and no sign.” Owen said, scrubbing his face with his hand. He was starting to grow a beard and it was rather handsome on him. But as I looked at him I could tell this ‘heat’ problem really bothered him.

“Ok. I mean I'm half human, maybe it takes longer?” He shook his head.

“I asked your mom and she said hers came in about a week after your dad marked her. So I don't think it's a human thing.” I bit my lip, but he took his thumb and slipped it away from my teeth. “I'm sure it's nothing, maybe I just can't smell good or something.”

“We both know that's not true. You scent better than most wolves. Is there like a shifter doctor we could see or something?” Now I was worried what if my not having a heat meant I'm broken. What if I can't have kids? Owen would be devastated. We always wanted to be parents. Tears started to sting my eyes.

“Hey now little Phoenix. None of the spiraling thoughts. We'll figure it out. There is a pack doctor at the wolf pack my dad and I are allied with so we can talk to them. I'll call and set an appointment. Don't cry little Phoenix. I love you no matter what.” He cuddled me close to him and his bear rumbled in his chest for me. Like a purring cat but so much louder.
