Chapter 7

Owen made the appointment for a week out. Just in case it did start then we could cancel the appointment but it never did. It was the day of the appointment and we were driving in his truck to the wolf pack hospital. Only about 20 minutes out from where we live. I was nervous and hardly slept the last few days. Worried Owen might reject me if I can give him or his bear a cub. I know we didn't want children right away but it still bothered me. “We're almost there, little Phoenix,” Owen held my hand and kissed the back of it. He knew I wasn't sleeping well. He knew I was worried but did he know how worried I was? “I'm sure everything is fine.” He gave me a reassuring smile as he turned into the wolf pack gates. After being stopped and asked, our truck searched from the outside. ‘I swear these wolves are more thorough than most military bases.’ Owen mind linked me. I snorted. We were told we could go and we pulled up to the hospital. We checked in and waited in the lobby for our names to be called. My heart raced the whole time and Owen tried his best to calm me down. Rubbing circles in my back and whispering to me. When our names were finally called I jumped up faster than a rabbit running from a hunter. We were led back to a small room with an exam table and 2 chairs in it. I sat on the table and Owen stood next to me. My blood pressure was high but I think the wolf who took my BP could tell why. A little while later there was a knock on the door. “Hello, I'm DR. Whitefang but most folks around here call me Bettie.” We shook her hand and introduced ourselves. “So the appointment ledger states you haven't started your heat?” We nodded. “The mating bond has been completed, yes?” We nodded again. “Ok then. So the good news is there are only 3 ways it wouldn't start. The first being your infertile. But most shifters can smell that a mile away. And you are not. So that leaves 2. So the second is that you're already pregnant and we can do a blood test for that. Seeing it would be too early for your mate to sniff it out.” “What's the third?” I asked in a hushed raspy voice. I cleared my throat. “The 3rd would be you have another mate out there somewhere.” She stated nonchalantly. “But that's rather rare and highly unlikely; only very strong and rare shifting breeds have 2 or more mates.” Owen and I both swallowed our eyes meeting. That had to be the reason, because I'm a Phoenix, an almost completely extinct species of shifter. We let the doctor do the blood test anyway just in case. But it came back negative. Just like I thought it would. “Huh well I guess we could run it again. Although it was ran twice in the lab. She looked at her notes. What type of shifter are you Ms.Zoey?” I swallowed my eyes darting to Owen. Unsure if we should tell the kind doctor. But he nodded indicating I should reveal my true Identity. “I'm not. But my father was a Phoenix. My mama said he told her I would shift on my 20th but I never did.” The doctor slowly looked at me. Putting her notes down on the counter. “You're a Phoenix?” she.whispered. “Yes.” I answered. “Wow.” She stood up abruptly and ran out of the room. We didn't know what to do. We were about to leave when she came back in with a large old book in her hands. “Sorry about that. I've never met a Phoenix before so I never had to study up on them.” She put the heavy leather bound book on the table. A puff of dust billowed from the pages. She flipped through the pages and landed on the section for Phoenixs. “Ok, here it is Female Phoenixs, ‘a female of this form will not shift on her 21st year, like the males. She will need to find her mate or mates and complete the mating process with them before she recovers her Phoenix. Females of this form tend to have more than one mate. The female's heat will come once she shifts.’ alright so find your other mate. And then you get to shift and then you'll have a heat.” I sat down nodding. Haha yeah this makes perfect sense! I'm going to have 2 mates. 2. Two. I could feel my cheeks burn. My mouth went dry. My palms sweat. I rubbed them on my pants. “Hey little Phoenix,” Owen squatted down in front of me looking up at me from where I was having a whole crisis. “I'll be ok. We'll find them. It'll be an adventure.” “An adventure? Owen, why are you not freaking out right now? Why are you so ok with this? I'm freaking out. Is it hot in here or is it just me?” I pulled at the collar of my shirt. My whole body felt like it was on fire. “Little Phoenix, your second mate will also be my second mate. We'll have to find them. So we can be complete. So our souls can be complete.” Owen scrunched his eyebrows together, he sniffed me. Then looked back at the doctor who was still looking at the book. “Hey doc?” “Mhmm looking for the answer. Think I found it. ‘a female who doesn't find her second mate soon after mating the first could spontaneously combust. This is her Phoenix trying to call for her other mate.’ let's maybe go outside then so we don't burn the building down!” She grabbed the book and held the door open for Owen, who had scooped me up. They rushed down the hall and to an emergency exit where a field was. Owen went as far as he could into it before I became too hot for him to hold anymore. “You're glowing again, Zoe.” He looked nervous. I couldn't stand up anymore and fell to my knees. I was so hot. I looked at my arms and they looked like they were glowing. A pulse of power, of what I can only assume was my Phoenix burst forward. Flames shot out of me, from my whole body my mouth my eyes my hair it all had flames coming out of it. I could feel my clothes burn away. Then I passed the f**k out again.
