Chapter 10: The Fall

1234 Words
"Wren, no!" Elara’s scream tore through the night, raw and desperate. She rushed to the window, peering down into the darkness, her heart seizing in her chest. Chloe, pale and shaking, was right behind her. Below, on the neatly manicured lawn, a crumpled figure lay motionless amidst the shadows. A sickening thud had echoed just moments before, a sound that would haunt Elara forever. Campus security guards, alerted by the commotion and Wren’s frantic dash, burst through the door, their flashlights sweeping the room. Their eyes, wide with shock, landed first on Elara and Chloe, then on the gaping hole in the wall, and finally, on the terrified, emaciated girl cowering within it. "What in God's name…?" one of the guards muttered, his voice thick with disbelief. He quickly radioed for backup, and within minutes, the dorm building was swarming with flashing lights and urgent voices. Elara and Chloe were pulled away from the window, their statements taken by bewildered police officers and campus authorities. The scene was chaotic. Paramedics rushed to the lawn below. More officers entered Room 4B, their faces grim as they took in Sarah’s condition and the hidden alcove. Sarah was carefully extracted from the wall, wrapped in a blanket, and immediately taken away by paramedics. She was barely conscious, her eyes wide with a fragile terror that seemed to cling to her like a shroud. As they wheeled her out, she looked at Elara, her lips moving silently, a whispered "Thank you" that was lost in the commotion. Elara was numb, watching it all unfold like a slow-motion nightmare. Wren. Beautiful, silent Wren. Driven to such extremes by a promise, by a delusion, by a desperate, misguided love. She had believed she was protecting Sarah, keeping her safe from a killer she was convinced was still lurking. And now… now she was gone. The police questioned Elara and Chloe for hours, their voices a muffled drone. Elara recounted everything: the strange noises, the hidden letters, the locket, Chloe’s stories, the discovery of Sarah, and Wren’s final, desperate act. She gave them the context of Lena’s disappearance, the male body in the woods, the chilling connection Wren had forged between them all.
Statement from Elara Vance, Freshman, Room 4B, Building C: "…And then she just jumped. She said, 'Lena, I’m coming,' and she was gone. She really believed she was protecting Sarah. She truly thought 'he' was still out there, that he killed Lena and would come back for Sarah. It was a… a twisted kind of love, I guess. She was so convinced."
The officers listened, their expressions a mixture of shock and professional skepticism. They promised a full investigation into Sarah Jenkins' captivity, and a re-evaluation of the Lena Petrova cold case. They found Lena’s letters, still tucked beneath Wren’s mattress, confirming Elara's story. The locket, with Lena’s picture and the lock of hair, was also taken as evidence. By dawn, the chaos began to subside. Elara and Chloe were moved to a temporary room, and Room 4B was taped off, a crime scene, a monument to the secrets it had held. Elara couldn’t sleep. She sat on the unfamiliar bed, staring at the muted patterns of the wallpaper, Wren’s final words echoing in her mind. *He’s always watching.* Had Wren truly been delusional? Or was there more to her paranoia? Was Lena’s killer still out there, truly watching, waiting? The next day, the campus was buzzing. News of the incident spread like wildfire. "Dorm Room Horror," "Missing Student Found Alive After Five Years," "Roommate Jumps to Death." The headlines were sensational, splashed across local news outlets and student forums. Elara and Chloe were suddenly at the center of a media storm, though the university tried to shield them. Chloe, still pale, sought out Elara. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice strained. "No," Elara admitted, shaking her head. "I keep seeing her. Wren. Falling. And Sarah… her face." "They said Sarah is in critical condition," Chloe said, her voice dropping. "Malnutrition, severe dehydration. They don't know if she'll fully recover, physically or mentally." A fresh wave of guilt washed over Elara. She had uncovered the truth, yes, but at what cost? Wren was dead. Sarah was barely clinging to life. Days blurred into a week. Elara and Chloe gave follow-up statements. Lena Petrova's case was officially reopened. The police confirmed Wren had died on impact. Her real name was Wren Davies, and she had been a childhood friend of Lena and Sarah, not Sarah herself. She had attended a different university after high school, but had transferred to Chandler this semester. The police theory, pieced together from early investigations and new evidence, was that Wren, devastated by Lena's disappearance and convinced of a killer, had taken it upon herself to "protect" Sarah when Sarah's mental health had deteriorated under the strain of the cold case. They believed Wren had convinced Sarah that the only way to be truly safe was to be hidden, and that she had become increasingly delusional over the years. But Elara couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. The "he." Lena’s fear. Wren’s absolute conviction. Was it all just the product of a grieving, unbalanced mind? One afternoon, a detective, a kind-faced woman named Detective Miller, asked Elara to look through Wren’s belongings from Room 4B. "We need to go through everything, see if there are any other clues," she explained. "We thought you, as her roommate, might notice anything out of place or unusual." Elara agreed, her stomach churning. Returning to the now sterile, empty Room 4B was chilling. The hole in the wall was covered by a temporary board. Wren’s side of the room was stripped bare, her bed, desk, and wardrobe gone, packed away by authorities. But in a box of Wren's personal effects, Elara found a small, worn photo album. Inside were pictures of Wren, Lena, and Sarah as children, laughing, holding hands, their faces bright with innocence. A poignant reminder of a friendship twisted by tragedy. And then, at the very back of the album, tucked into a hidden sleeve, Elara found another photo. It was a faded Polaroid, creased and worn. It showed Lena, Sarah, and Wren, standing together, arms around each other, on the very steps of Building C. They looked so young, so full of hope. But behind them, blurred in the background, a figure stood in the shadows, partially obscured by the dorm's entrance. A male figure. Tall, slender, with dark hair. He was watching them. And on the back of the photo, scrawled in Lena’s frantic handwriting, were two words: *He’s here.* Elara’s breath hitched. This wasn't a delusion. Lena had been right. And Wren had been right. The killer *was* real. And he had been there, five years ago, watching them. Watching Lena. A chill, far colder than any ghost, ran through Elara. If Wren was right, if "he" was real, and Wren was now dead… what did that mean for Sarah? And for Elara, who had inadvertently exposed the secret? Elara felt an unsettling sense of dread bloom in her chest. She had opened the panel. She had let Sarah out. But in doing so, had she also opened the door to a danger Wren had desperately tried to keep at bay? And was that danger, the real danger, still out there, now aware that his secret was partially unearthed?
