Episode 17

“She is, I swear.” I said quickly. “But this… this isn’t something a healer creates.” He pointed out. “I know.” I bit my lip as I was torn between my loyalty to my mother and my father, the king, and this interesting enemy who seemed like he could be trusted. I had to remember who he was. Though he seemed harmless enough now that he was recovering from an injury, he was still a prince of my enemy and a warrior. He had been on that battlefield where my mother might even still be tending to wounds that he inflicted with his own blade. “Did you get any on your hand when you opened it?” I gently touched his hand to examine it, but there appeared to be no liquid there. “No, I’m fine. Is it really so potent?” I shook my head yes and turned to lead him out of the room. The mood had shifted towards something a bit darker now, and I could tell we needed to end the evening. “Sit down and let me examine your wound now that it’s getting late.” I motioned to the chair he had vacated to follow me into my mother’s workshop. He sat down with a huff of pain, and I could tell from his tense shoulders that being up and about so much today had taken a toll on him. I unwrapped his bandage to see his wound healing very nicely. I grabbed a clean cloth and some warm water and began washing the paste off his wound. He chuckled softly and grabbed my hand in his to stop me. “That tickles.” “Good, you’re able to feel something more than pain in the area.” I handed the cloth to him. “Finish wiping off the paste and let it air dry for a bit. I’m going to change clothes for bed and then I’ll be in to wrap it again.” I went into the bedroom and closed the door behind me. He had began wiping off the paste, so I figured he had that under control. Though with his luck, he’d reopen his wound without supervision. With that thought, I quickly changed into my nightgown and inspected my covers for signs of blood from last night. Luckily, I hadn’t tossed in my sleep, so it seemed clean even though I had slept in those stained clothes. I returned to the main room to see Zane leaning back in the chair. “How’s it looking?” I asked as I inspected it again. I was very confident that he would have no further issues, so I smiled to myself with pride. “So, what’s the verdict, doc? Am I going to live?” He joked in a gruff voice as my hands slid over his abdomen while I wrapped the wound again. “You’ll be fine. You can probably return to your people tomorrow if the snow has melted a bit and you feel stronger.” As I tied the knot on the bandage, his large hands gently took hold of mine. I looked down into his face, startled by the contact. “Kiss me again then if we will be parting ways tomorrow. That way I know you were real and not a ghostly dream.” I glanced away from those burning, sinful eyes and blushed. “We are supposed to be enemies.” “But I feel the way the legends say Zarick did after meeting Ellowyn when I look at you.” I gently pulled my hands away. “You mean, your legends.” I say as I turned my back to him to walked out of the room. His strong grip on my upper arm turned me into him and his lips were on mine again. Though he had been hasty in pulling me back to him, his kiss was much gentler this time and I sighed against him. As his tongue coaxed my lips open and tangled with mine, I felt a sensation like a bow string being pulled back tighter and tighter in my stomach.
