“A permanent alliance.” I repeat slowly. It’s a joke. They have to be joking. I look between them expectantly, waiting for the punch line.
“But that’s ridiculous, it’s not possible. I am the Elemental heir and Lycur is the Lupinel heir. It would mean that one of us would have to give up our right to rule by the other, and we all know that’s not likely.” I know Lycur isn’t about to put aside his claim to his father’s throne, and I’m certainly not going to hand the fate of my people over to someone else.
“He has proposed that you both continue to rule your respective lands separately but maintain your marital rights. Which means that you would obey Lycur in all matters other than those of state.” Mother answers carefully, keeping her tone and expression neutral.
