"Hey Madison," I said coldly. "What do you want?" Madison's jaw dropped. "You would say that to your girlfriend?" she asked. "Ex-girlfriend," I corrected. "Now, what do you want?" "What do I want?" Madison repeated as if it was a challenging question.
"I want you to go to the dance with me," Madison said. "And I want to marry a Disney movie princess and honeymoon to London, but I don't see that actually happening." I replied coldly. "Oh Luke," she laughed. "You are so funny."
The tone that she was using didn't mean that she was being serious. "Sorry," I said. "But I don't want to go to some dance with you." Madison squinted at me then crossed her arms. "Because of Cole?" she questioned. "What does Cole have to do with anything?" I asked.
"While I was rehearsing for the dance competition," Madison explained. "I saw Cole talking to some male dancer." I glared at her. "So?" I asked. "So," Madison began. "Are you jealous?" I shook my head and stared at the door. "I know you are jealous," she continued. "Cole isn't good for you."
"Shut up, Rebecca." I said. Madison blushed and glared at me. "That's not my name," she said. "Yeah it is," I said. "You made your parents change it, because you wanted to be named after Madison Square Garden, right?" How I knew about it, because she told me.
Madison clamped her mouth shut. "Either keep your mouth quiet about my friend, or I will tell the world about your name, Rebecca." The front doors finally opened as all of the kids hurried upstairs to get their lockers.
As I unlocked my locker, Cole walked over to me. She wore a blue plaid shirt, jeans, and sneakers. She brushed away her locks and smiled at me. I could have sworn my heart was accelerating a bit faster. "How are you doing?" she asked.
I nodded. "Alexander gave me a package of all of his journals, photos, and letters for me to look at." Cole bit her lip. "Alexander isn't mad at you," I reassured, reading her thoughts. "He said to me that he once attended a lot of extracurricular activities when he was our age."
Cole let out a sigh of relief. "Have you found anything exciting?" she asked. "I discovered his older sister and Natalie have a bit of an argument. When I asked Alexander, he explained that she has bipolar and dementia."
"She has two diseases?" Cole asked. "Apparently," I shrugged. "After school, I am going to pay a visit with June." "Can I come?" she offered. "Dancing competition, remember?" I reminded. "Oh, right." Cole sighed. For an instant, I felt a bit sorry for her. Just when I was about to say something, a boy walked over to us.
He had slick brown hair, blue eyes, and a chiseled face. He had a blue t-shirt, khaki pants, and black loafers. "Hey Cole," he said. "Are you ready to practice for our solo?" I glanced at Cole then back at the boy.
"Sorry," Cole apologized. "Luke, this is my dance partner, Zach." I smiled and shook his hand. "Please to meet you," I greeted. Zach stared at me. "You're Luke Hamilton, right?" he asked. I nodded very slowly. "You guys solved the mystery of Tony Blair!" he exclaimed. "I am a very big fan of your duo.." "The Expedition," Cole said, looking at me. "Luke picked the name."
"I like it," he complimented. "The Expedition, great title." "Thank you," I said softly. The bell rang for first period. Zach waved us goodbye and headed to class. "He's pretty cute, isn't he?" Cole swooned. My eyes widened. "He's pretty cool," I shrugged, taking my English textbook from my locker. "Do you want to walk with me to class?"
She nodded and closed her locker. As Ms. Whitfield droned on about the lesson, Cole stayed focus on Zach, who was busy taking notes. I suppressed my anger by copying the caked white words on the board. I didn't know what I was feeling or why. I just know that I was getting really annoyed of Cole not writing down what the English teacher was saying.
After the bell rang for second period, everyone packed their things and moved to the next classroom. I glanced at Cole and tried to get her into talking about the case until the announcement came on. "Attention students," the announcer said. "The students from the Dance Team must be excused for all periods except for lunch?"
Ten people, including Cole and Zach, walked outside of the English classroom. I slowly grabbed my backpack and hurried to my second period class. Things were a bit slower after that. I couldn't concentrate Physics class or even P.E. without wondering what Cole was doing with that guy.
I tried to be happy for Cole, but more and more of my happiness keeps slipping away. I suddenly missed her. After school, I saw Cole talking excitedly to Zach on the front steps.
Instead of saying hi, I quietly avoided them and headed home. After tossing my backpack on my bed, I read the diary pages then made simple notes about Alexander on the corkboard.
My phone was suddenly buzzing. I picked up the phone and saw Cole's text appearing on the screen. I texted Hello with a smiley emoji and continued with my research. "Hey Grouchy Pants," said a familiar voice.
It was Seth, standing right besides me. "Where's Cole?" he asked. "She has a dancing competition to do," I shrugged. "Did you know that her dance partner is Zach?" Seth asked.
I gave him an annoyed look. "So?" I asked. "Cole and Zach are just friends. I am supportive of her decision-" "Even if they're dating?" Seth asked. I flipped to another page. "Did Madison told you?" I guessed.
"The annoying blond girl screams like a chipmunk?" Seth guessed. I nodded and flipped to another page. "What are you doing?" Seth asked. "I have to solve a cold case of Hilton's wife."
Seth gave me a questionable look. "Isn't he the guy who owns like a huge hotel?" I nodded again. "Can I help?" Seth offered. "If you want," I shrugged. "I am going to some nursery home and try to talk to June Hilton."
"What can I do?" he asked. I handed him a couple of addresses and diary pages. "See if you can find Hilton's parents," I instructed. "If you find them, call me on my cellphone."
I rose up from my seat and allowed him to take over the laptop. I crawled out of the enterance and closed it behind me. I glanced at the heavy load of work on my desktop.
After my interview with June, I have a lot of work to complete. As I walked downstairs, I sneak pass my parents' room and left the house.
I was heading down the sidewalk until a red van parked next to me. I looked and saw Cole in the front seat. She gave me a wave then gestured me to come inside. I looked at the path then nodded.
Driving to the hospital was easier than walking. As I crawled into the front seat, Cole pressed her foot against the acceleration and continued driving.
