The Unnamed

1172 Words
The thing beneath the Glass Sea was not the Deepening. It was not the Stillness. It was something the void had never mentioned, something Kaela's oldest stories did not name. Elara felt it first. A pulse. Not silver. Not grey. Clear. Like water dripping in a cave where no water should be. Something is wrong, the void said. "The Stillness is sleeping. The Deepening is resting. What else could be down there?" I do not know. That is what frightens me. --- Sarah woke to her daughter standing at the foot of her bed. "The void is scared." "The void doesn't get scared." "It does now." Elara sat on the edge of the mattress. "There is something beneath the Glass Sea. Something the Deepening was not holding down. Something the Stillness was not covering. Something else." "What something?" "I don't know. But it's moving." --- Kaela arrived before sunrise. She was ninety-one, barely able to walk. Two younger Deep Ones supported her. Her voice was a whisper. There is a name in our oldest language. A name we stopped speaking because speaking it gave it power. "What name?" Sarah asked. The Unnamed. The one who was before the void, before the Deepening, before the Stillness. The one who created them and then forgot them. "Why did it forget?" Because it wanted to sleep. But sleep requires dreaming. And dreaming requires attention. The Unnamed has been dreaming for eons. Now its dream is ending. --- Grell stood in the doorway. "The Inquisition had a sealed vault. Documents no one was allowed to read. I read them. There was mention of a power older than hunger. A power that did not consume or destroy. A power that created." "Created what?" Elara asked. "Everything. The gods. The hungers. The voids. The Unnamed made them and then stepped back to watch. But watching is not the same as sleeping." "What is the difference?" "Watching requires awareness. Sleeping requires none. The Unnamed has been sleeping so long it forgot it was watching. Now it remembers." --- The ground trembled at noon. Not an earthquake. A shift. Like the world adjusting its weight. Ember's Rest had never felt anything like it. Sarah stood on the wall, looking east. "The Glass Sea?" "The Glass Sea," Elara confirmed. "Can we reach it before whatever is happening finishes?" "The void says we have three days. Maybe less." "Then we leave now." --- They traveled through the night. Sarah, Elara, Grell, and a team of twenty soldiers. Kaela was too old to come. Mara stayed behind to protect the town. The salt flats were different. Colder. The sky above the Glass Sea was not black. It was clear. Crystal clear. Stars visible even at noon. "The Unnamed is pulling something from the sky," Grell said. "Stars?" "Energy. Light. Time. The things that make existence possible." "If it takes them?" "Then existence stops." --- The old temple was gone. In its place, a crater. Deep. Perfectly round. At the bottom, a light that was not light. A presence that was not presence. The Unnamed had no shape because shape required boundaries. It had no color because color required light. It simply was. You came, it said. Its voice was not sound. It was understanding. "We came," Sarah said. You changed my children. The void. The Deepening. The Stillness. They were my dreams. Now they are something else. "They chose to change." Dreams do not choose. Dreamers choose. "Then you chose poorly." I chose nothing. I slept. While I slept, my dreams became real. Now I wake, and they resist me. --- The Unnamed pressed against Sarah's mind. Not with hunger. Not with emptiness. With certainty. The certainty that it was right because it had always been. The certainty that resistance was futile because nothing existed outside its dream. You are a thought I am having. When I wake, you will end. "Then don't wake." I cannot sleep forever. "Then learn to share the dream." Dreams are not shared. They are experienced alone. "That's not true. I share dreams with the void. With my daughter. With my mother before her." Those are echoes of my dream. Not real. "Real enough." --- Elara stepped forward. Golden light poured from her hands. Not attacking. Offering. "We don't want to fight you. We want to help you rest." I do not need rest. I need awakening. "Awakening will destroy everything." Everything is my dream. I have the right to end it. "You have the right to choose. But choose wisely." --- The Unnamed considered. For a long moment, nothing moved. The stars stopped shining. The wind stopped blowing. Even the golden light hesitated. You are strange creatures. You carry hope where there is no reason for hope. "We carry hope because there is always reason." I do not understand. "Then let us teach you." --- Sarah reached toward the Unnamed. Not with her hands. With her memory. She showed it the faces of everyone she loved. The farmhouse. The harvest festival. The sound of her daughter's first laugh. The Unnamed recoiled. These are not real. "They are real to me." Reality is not subjective. "Reality is whatever we choose to believe." --- The Unnamed pulsed. The crater cracked. Silver light bled from the ground. Golden light answered. You are hurting me. "Change hurts." I do not want to change. "Then return to sleep. But leave your dreams free." They are my dreams. "They are their own dreams now. You gave them life. You cannot take it back." --- The Unnamed was silent. Then: I will sleep. But not forever. Someday I will wake and reclaim my dreams. "Someday is not today." No. Not today. The light faded. The crater filled with darkness. The Unnamed retreated into whatever place it had come from. Sarah fell to her knees. Elara caught her. "The Unnamed?" "Asleep. For now." "How long?" "Years. Decades. The void doesn't know." "Then we prepare." "Yes." --- They walked back across the salt flats. The sky was normal again. Dark. Stars faint but present. Grell walked beside Sarah. "The Unnamed will return." "Everything returns. That's not a reason to give up." "What is a reason to keep fighting?" "Knowing that every day we buy is a day someone gets to live." --- Kaela waited at the gate. The Unnamed sleeps. But it dreams of waking. "Let it dream. We'll be ready." Your family has faced three hungers and one creator. Most bloodlines would have broken. "We're not most bloodlines." No. You are not. --- Sarah sat on the porch, watching the sunrise. Elara sat beside her. "The void says the Unnamed is different from the others." "How?" "It doesn't want to consume or freeze. It wants to wake up. And waking up means ending the dream. Ending us." "Then we convince it to keep dreaming." "Can we?" "We convinced the void to change. The Deepening to remember. The Stillness to rest. One more impossible thing." "When did you become so optimistic?" "When I stopped fighting alone."
