The Dream Returns

583 Words
Sarah dreamed of silver light on the night of her ninth birthday. She was standing on a beach of black sand, staring at a sea that glowed like molten metal. The waves didn't crash. They whispered. And beneath the whisper, a voice she had never heard but somehow knew. You are the heir. "I'm just a girl." You are the echo of the echo of the echo of the echo. The void's last vessel. "I don't want to be a vessel." The void does not care what you want. The silver sea rose. Sarah woke screaming. --- Elara reached her daughter's room in seconds. "The Deepening?" "It spoke to me. Said I was the void's last vessel." "The void has been wrong before." "It wasn't wrong. I could feel it. The emptiness." Elara sat on the bed. "The Deepening lies." "It doesn't lie. It doesn't need to. Emptiness is honest." "When did you get so wise?" "I learned from you." --- Lyra stood in the doorway. She was fifty-nine now, her body frail, her eyes still sharp. She walked with a cane, but she didn't need it to see the fear in her granddaughter's eyes. "The Deepening came to me too. When I was your age." "What did you do?" "I listened. Then I chose to hope." "Was it hard?" "It was the hardest thing I've ever done. But it was worth it." --- The void stirred inside Elara. The Deepening is reaching out to your daughter. It knows she is the next vessel. "Can you protect her?" I can try. But the Deepening is older. More patient. "Then we need to seal it before she has to face it." That would require a sacrifice. "I know." You would volunteer. "I would." Your daughter would lose her mother. "She would gain a world without hunger." That is not the same. "No. But it's enough." --- Sarah trained harder after the dream. Sword drills with wooden blades. Shield work. The golden light—calling it, shaping it, aiming it. The void guided her, patient and warm. You are afraid, it said. "I'm terrified." Good. Fear keeps you sharp. "I don't want to be sharp. I want to be safe." Safety is a lie. Courage is the only truth. "Who taught you that?" Your mother. She is very wise. "Was?" She is not dying. Not yet. But she is tired. --- Elara sat on the porch, watching the sunset. Lyra sat beside her. "The void says you're tired." "The void says a lot of things." "Is it true?" Elara was silent. "Yes." "Then rest. The Deepening can wait." "The Deepening is patient. So am I." "That's not the same as resting." "It's the closest I can get." --- Sarah came to the porch. "Mom?" "Yes?" "The void says the Deepening is going to come back. In my lifetime." "The void has been wrong before." "It wasn't wrong about this. I can feel it." Elara pulled her daughter onto her lap. "Then we face it together. Same as my mother faced it with me. Same as her mother faced it with her." "That's a lot of facing." "That's what it means to carry hope." --- The void spoke to Elara that night. Your daughter is brave. "She's stubborn." Same thing. "No. Bravery is choosing to fight. Stubbornness is refusing to stop." What is the difference? "One is a decision. The other is a way of life." Then I am learning to be brave. "Yes. You are."
