The Final Stand

468 Words
The Deepening came for the last time on a winter morning, when the snow was deep and the fires burned low. No army this time. No creatures. Just a single figure—tall, silver, hollow—walking across the eastern fields. Its eyes were pits of nothing. Its mouth was a wound. I have come for the void, it said. Kaela stood on the wall. "The void is not yours to take." The void is mine. I created it. I will consume it. "The void changed. You can too." Emptiness does not change. "Watch me." --- Kaela climbed down from the wall and walked across the snow. Elara watched from the gate, her heart pounding. "Don't," she whispered. But Kaela kept walking. --- The Deepening's figure stopped ten feet from her. You are brave. "I'm scared. There's a difference." What is the difference? "Bravery is choosing to fight. Fear is being honest about the cost." You fear death. "I fear failure. Death is just a door." The void has taught you well. "The void taught me to hope. I taught myself the rest." --- Kaela raised her hands. Golden light poured from her palms—warm, bright, gentle. It washed over the Deepening's figure. The figure flinched. That light is an abomination. "It's hope. You wouldn't understand." Hope is a lie. "Then let me lie to you." --- The figure lunged. Kaela met it with golden light. The light pushed against the emptiness—not burning, but filling. Where the light touched, the figure's form solidified. What are you doing? "Giving you something to be." I do not want to be. "Too late." --- The figure screamed. Not in pain—in fear. It had never felt fear before. The Deepening had not prepared it for fear. Stop. "Surrender." I cannot. "Then dissolve." Kaela pushed harder. The figure's form collapsed—not into pieces, but into nothing. The emptiness scattered. The silver light faded. The Deepening's servant was gone. --- The void spoke. The Deepening is wounded. It may not recover. "Or it may." Or it may. But not today. "No. Not today." Rest now. "I will." I will watch. "You're learning to watch?" I am learning to care. "Yes. You are." --- Elara met Kaela at the gate. "You did it." "We did it." "You led." "We followed." Elara pulled her daughter into a hug. "I'm proud of you." "I know." "You don't have to say it back." "I know that too." --- They walked through the streets of Ember's Rest. The townspeople watched them pass. Some cheered. Some cried. Most just stared in awe. Kaela held her mother's hand. "The void says the Deepening is sleeping. Maybe forever." "Do you believe it?" "I want to." "Then believe it. Hope is not a lie. It's a choice."
