The child was born on the longest night of winter, when the snow was deep and the fires burned low.
Elara held her daughter in the farmhouse where she had been born, where her father had been born, where the Ember had first awakened decades ago. The baby's eyes were grey—James's grey, Taylor's grey, the grey of the void-touched.
"What will you name her?" Taylor asked.
"Kaela. After the Deep One who tried to burn the harvest."
"That's a strange tribute."
"He tried to destroy us. Now he helps us grow. That's worth remembering."
Taylor touched the baby's cheek.
"She's beautiful."
"She's stubborn. I can already tell."
"Like her grandmother."
"Like all of us."

Kaela listened with wide eyes.
"And the void?" she asked.
"That's your mother's story."
"Tell me anyway."
James looked at Elara.

"What did you see?"
"The emptiness. The silver light. It said I belong to it."
"You belong to no one."
"It said the void is weak. That I am weak. That the Deepening will consume everything."
Elara held her daughter.
"The Deepening lies. It's afraid. That's why it tries to scare you."
"The Deepening is afraid of me?"
"Of what you represent. Hope. Change. A future without hunger."
Kaela stopped shaking.
"Then I'll never stop hoping."
"That's my girl."

"Same thing."

"I won't. The void will come with me."
"The void is inside you. That's not the same as having someone to hold your hand."
Elara looked at her father.
"Then hold my hand."
James sat beside her.
"Always."

"Then come with me."
"I will."
"Kaela will need you."
"Kaela will have James. And Tommy. And the Deep Ones. She'll be surrounded by people who love her."
Elara took her mother's hand.
"Then we go together."
"Together."
