Chapter 3There was no hiding Eddie’s excitement.
“Eli!” he signed my name over and over, offering several high-pitched squeals in between that rattled my eardrums.
“C-a-s-e-y?” Esmerelda still had her favorite.
“Casey is—”

He’d somehow sneaked up behind me down in the veterinarian’s exam room.
Eddie already in my arms, Max wanted to join him on my other hip. “I thought they might forget me…or be angry that I left.”
“Pish posh. Love ain’t work that way, Slick. You seen Luddy, Mort, and Rufus yet?”
