Winter on the Shore by J.T. MarieEvery morning she went down to the sea. Standing on a short outcropping of stone that jutted out into the restless waves, she’d watch the sun rise, and watch the sea turn from black to rose to white, and stay blindingly white for as long as it took for the sun to pull itself out of the choppy water and traverse the sky. When the sun was high enough to color the edges of the cool breezes with a tinge of red, she would walk along the sand, just out of reach of the incoming tide, and head back home. In the winter, when the tourists who flocked to the island went home and the aging boardwalk belched its last for the season and died, she was all alone.
