"So, what exactly do you want?" Lila was a clever woman; she had no interest in playing word games.
"Be my woman," Sebastian stated firmly, his gaze dark and intense as he stared at Lila.
Lila let out a snort of laughter, but Sebastian could hear the mockery in her tone.
"Sebastian, I think you're mistaken. First, I, Lila, don't need your help. Even if my family is in trouble, that’s my business. Second, we’ve been intimate, but we’re both adults—it's not a big deal. Third, I hope you can keep this a secret." Lila wasn’t someone who could be easily manipulated. She knew Sebastian wasn’t a good person, so she straightforwardly rejected him.
"Oh, really? You’re quite bold. But have you considered that your father is in constant danger while he's in custody?" Sebastian's eyes were cold as he stared at Lila. His words hit her right in the heart, causing her anxiety to spike. The air seemed to grow thicker, almost suffocating, as the reality of the situation weighed on her.
"Enough! Stop talking!" Lila suddenly snapped, interrupting Sebastian mid-sentence.
Indeed, her father's safety was the thing she worried about the most.
"You just don't have the ability to face it. What you need now is me." A domineering and cold statement slipped from Sebastian's thin lips.
What you need is me?
The words echoed in Lila's mind. Why would Sebastian say something like that? Lila stared at him with reddened eyes, meeting his deep, unfathomable gaze.
She didn’t respond but instead waited quietly for him to continue. Since he already knew so much about her situation, he must have planned what he wanted to say next.
"I can help you solve all your problems, as long as you become my woman." Sebastian stated his demand, his thin lips barely moving as if he were casually sketching something in the air. A complex mix of emotions appeared in Lila's eyes.
Be his woman? Lila understood perfectly well what he meant—he didn’t consider her worthy of being his wife.
Even if he had proposed marriage, Lila wouldn’t have been interested. The scars Adrian had left on her were too deep for her to move on easily. If even a man like Adrian could cheat on her, then what about a man as arrogant and powerful as Sebastian?
Humiliation—this was absolute humiliation!
Lila bit her lip in silence, but Sebastian, cold-blooded as ever, added, "Don’t worry, it won’t be for long. A month at most."
"I refuse." Anger surged within her, her heart pounding. How dare he? And what did he mean, "a month at most"? Did that mean she’d be tossed aside when he was done with her?
"What’s the matter? Don’t pretend to be so innocent. A woman like you doesn’t have the right to refuse me." For the first time in his life, Sebastian was being rejected, and he was a bit irked. Although his face didn't show much expression, the slight furrow of his brows clearly indicated his displeasure.
His words felt like a cold, sharp knife stabbing into Lila’s heart.
Sebastian’s face showed a hint of smug satisfaction as he smiled faintly and said, "Don’t struggle. Going against me won’t do you any good."
There was no doubt—this was a warning!
"Haha, Sebastian really likes to joke. Whether or not I agree is my choice." Lila glared at him angrily, countering his arrogance. What gave him the right to be so self-important?
"Heh..." Sebastian chuckled coldly.
The atmosphere grew tense, and Lila sensed that something wasn’t right.
Sebastian’s striking eyes moved up and down as he scrutinized Lila. He hadn’t expected her to have the courage to speak so boldly at a time like this. She truly had no fear.
"How you choose isn’t up to you. I’m giving you a week to think it over." His mocking words came from his attractive lips, carrying a chilling undertone that inspired fear. Seeing her look so small and fragile, Sebastian narrowed his long, sharp eyes slightly.
Lila, one day you’ll understand that you owe me everything!
Jiaru Hospital.
Lila stood in the changing room, preparing to take off her surgical gown when Head Nurse Weng Jingjing walked in, greeting her warmly.
"Lila, congratulations! Another successful surgery," Weng Jingjing said with a smile. She was in her early forties and the head nurse of the cardiology department at Jiaru Hospital. She had just assisted Lila in completing a major heart surgery.
"Sister Weng, you're too kind. The success of the surgery is also thanks to your help," Lila replied as she twisted her neck. She was truly exhausted; the surgery had taken a full six hours. She hadn't even had lunch, and besides her stomach growling with hunger, her neck was so stiff that she could barely lift her head.
"Lila, you're really a talent in Jiaru Hospital. You've only been here for two months, and your clinical experience is catching up to Dr. Li’s. I heard the director spoke with Dr. Li yesterday about giving you a raise and a promotion next month," Weng Jingjing said proudly, as if she, too, had been recognized by the director.
Lila gave a slight smile. Dr. Li, whom Weng Jingjing mentioned, was Li Zeyuan, the chief director of their cardiology department—a highly respected figure in the city’s cardiology field. However, ever since Lila returned from the UK and joined Jiaru Hospital, her presence seemed to pose a threat to Li Zeyuan. Lila knew very well that Li Zeyuan did not particularly like her, which was why all the high-risk, challenging surgeries were assigned to her.
"Alright, if I get a raise, I'll definitely treat you to a meal, Sister Weng," Lila said cheerfully. Since she joined the hospital, Weng Jingjing had always been very helpful to her. Lila naturally felt grateful towards her. Though she was competent, surviving in a hospital wasn't easy, and interpersonal relationships could be complicated.
A smile appeared in Weng Jingjing's eyes as she said, "Then it's a deal."
Lila changed out of her surgical gown and said, "Yes, it's a deal."
After leaving the changing room, Lila returned to the twenty-fourth floor of the inpatient department. It was lunchtime, and with a serious expression, Lila walked down the hospital corridor. Whenever she had worries, she liked to be alone in a quiet place to think things through.
The situation at home made her very anxious. Lila felt a mix of emotions: sadness, anger, grievance, worry, and a sense of unwillingness and frustration.
For twenty-two years, she had been her parents' cherished treasure, but just yesterday, her life had undergone a dramatic shift. Her first love's betrayal and her own loss of innocence were things she couldn’t accept. Lila had once loved Adrian deeply, truly loved him, but overnight, all that love had turned into hatred.
At this moment, she absolutely could not collapse; she couldn’t give in!
Leaning against the corner of the wall, Lila's thoughts kept growing more intense, but the sound of a conversation pulled her back to reality.
"Boss, Shi Botao’s hospitalization is a rare opportunity," Zou Yingjie said softly into Sebastian’s ear.
Sebastian had a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He suddenly took it between his fingers, his cold eyes sweeping across the floor tiles. In the dim light and shadow, his attractive thin lips parted slightly as he said, "Take him out. Remember, do it without a trace; make it look like a medical accident."
"Boss, isn’t this too ruthless? He’s your uncle," Zou Yingjie’s expression suddenly changed. If Shi Botao were really killed, Madam Knight would go mad.
"He’s been siphoning money from JS International for so long; he should’ve been dead a long time ago. This time, it’s his own fault—who else can he blame?" Sebastian replied coldly, a dangerous smile playing on his lips.
