Chapter 8 A familiar name

1198 Words
Lila hid in the corner, watching this dangerous man. Just a few words were enough for her to understand that he was not simple. His voice was so cold, yet strangely familiar... But who were they talking about taking out? Shi Botao? She felt like she had heard that name somewhere before. Her mind buzzed as she tried to recall who Shi Botao was when suddenly, a commanding voice rang in her ear. The voice was deep and pleasant, like the strings of a cello, but it was so cold it made her shiver. “Who’s there?”The voice carried a cold indifference, devoid of any emotion. It was summer, but Lila suddenly felt extremely cold, as if her limbs were frozen by ice and snow, and her blood rushed in reverse through her veins in panic. Lila slowly lifted her head. She hadn’t seen his face clearly because he was turned away from her, but now he had turned around. The moment their eyes met, a chill ran down Lila’s spine. His beautiful dark eyes were cold and stern, and his aloof face seemed to be filled with danger. It was Sebastian! Lila wished she could just hit her head against a wall and be done with it. “I didn’t hear anything,”Lila said, taking three deep breaths in her heart, trying to appear calm. “Heh…”The man let out a cold laugh, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of his thin lips. Sebastian’s obsidian-like eyes held a hidden depth. Seeing the nervous look on Lila’s face, the smile in Sebastian’s eyes deepened. It was clear that Lila was scared. Didn’t hear anything? Then how would she know they had been talking? What a foolish woman, thinking she could be clever. Through her eyes, he could almost see the faint fear coloring her delicate face. Lila felt a tingling on her scalp. This man exuded an inherent coldness and an oppressive aura. Talking to him required her to be on high alert. “What are you so nervous about?”Sebastian suddenly started walking, his lips still curled in a cold smile, moving towards Lila. He took one step down the stairs... “What makes you think I’m nervous?”Lila’s mind was racing. She looked around; this was the twenty-fourth floor, the inpatient department she was most familiar with. The hospital should be safe enough, she thought. Sebastian squinted, his thin lips barely moving. His dark eyes scanned Lila up and down. How interesting, they had met again. Was it fate? Or was it karma! “Are you a doctor at this hospital?”Sebastian asked playfully, though in reality, he already knew everything about Lila. “No, I’m not.”Lila denied it outright. Did she look like someone who would admit it? “If you’re not a doctor, then why are you wearing a white coat?”There was a hint of ridicule in Sebastian’s deep eyes. “Hahaha... I’m just wearing it for fun,”Lila tried to cover her lack of confidence with a laugh. But just as she finished speaking, Sebastian had already grabbed her shoulder with one hand, his grip so strong that it made tears well up in Lila’s eyes. Fortunately, she was someone who could handle pain; even when injured, she usually wouldn’t frown. “Still so stubborn. Tell me, what exactly did you hear?”Sebastian’s tone was filled with impatience, his cold eyes narrowing slightly. He hated when people played such foolish games with him. “What do you want me to say? I really didn’t hear anything.”Lila’s clear eyes met his, a look of innocence on her face. She denied it completely; she would never admit to what she had overheard. “In that case, don’t blame me for being rude.”Sebastian suddenly released her, and Lila, unable to keep her balance, stumbled back a few steps. Yingjie Zou quickly walked down as well, his expression even colder. Standing behind Sebastian in his black suit, his stiff demeanor only made Lila feel more anxious. “What do you want to do? This is a hospital.”Lila pressed against the wall, feeling a chill down her spine. She furrowed her brows and asked nervously. “So what if it’s a hospital? Do you believe me when I say that if I wanted, I could have this hospital shut down tomorrow?”Sebastian’s face remained calm, as if everything was under his control. His words carried an invisible menace and domineering aura that made it hard for Lila to breathe. “Heh, if you were really that powerful, why would you even be here?”Lila looked at Sebastian with contempt, thinking he was just bragging. If Lila had felt a bit afraid of Sebastian earlier, now she only found it amusing. Who wouldn’t know how to scare people? She had seen plenty of people like him. Besides, intimidation and coercion were Sebastian’s usual tactics. How childish! “Are you asking me a question?”Sebastian found Lila’s challenging tone amusing. No one had ever been so bold as to ask him questions, especially in such a questioning tone. Lila nodded firmly and said,“Yes, and let me remind you, this is a hospital. Every corner is monitored. If you don’t believe me, look up and see for yourself.” There was a long silence. Sebastian didn’t look up, but he believed Lila’s words. Indeed, the hospital was full of surveillance cameras, especially in places like this emergency exit. “Do you think that’s enough to threaten me?”Sebastian’s expression didn’t change, his dark face showing a faint smile. His eyes still carried a hint of cruelty, and his thin lips curled into a barely noticeable arc. Threaten? The word flashed through Lila’s mind. She had never thought of threatening Sebastian; she just wanted to get away from him as quickly as possible. Running into him, she hadn’t even dared to admit she was a doctor at this hospital, just to avoid future troubles. “Sebastian, if I was disrespectful earlier, please forgive me. But I swear, I really didn’t hear anything. I’m very busy. Can I leave now?”Lila’s pleasant voice trembled slightly as she kept a calm smile in the quiet corridor. Right now, she had nothing to be afraid of! “Remember what you said today. Even if you did hear something, pretend you didn’t, or you’ll have to bear the consequences.”Sebastian calmly laid down his warning and brushed past Lila. Lila pursed her lips, feeling weak all over. She blinked her big eyes rapidly, still somewhat out of sorts. Phew! That was close! Back in the office, Lila sat in a chair, quietly looking at the patient’s medical report, but Sebastian’s words still echoed in her ears, especially that name, Shi Botao! Where had she heard that name before? Why did it sound so familiar? Although Lila was sure she didn’t know this person, the feeling of her mind being stuck bothered her. As she flipped through the medical files, she suddenly saw the name—Shi Botao!
