The Truth About My Father

200 Words
The truth came out over dinner. My father didn’t look at me when he said it. “Mason saved my life.” I froze. Years ago, my father and Mason had been involved in something illegal. A deal gone wrong. Guns. Blood. Sirens. Mason took the fall so my father could walk free. “He did time for me,” my father said. “That’s why he stays away from this family.” Later that night, I found Mason in his garage. “You went to prison,” I whispered. He nodded once. “I paid my debt.” “And me?” His eyes softened — just for a moment. “You’re the only thing I’m afraid of wanting.” I sit there staring at him trying to grasp myself, as he try’s to focus on the now cold mashed potatoes. Everything got quiet. No forks scraping plates no laughing about each others day. Just. Silent. At that moment I knew. I knew that mason was scared of wanting me and how much my touch could affect his body. I know it wouldn’t be right. But love never is. I can feel there’s something mason is protecting me from.
