The pack in the shadows

775 Words
Elias woke to the sound of dripping water and the smell of damp stone. His head throbbed as if it had been split open, and for a long moment he could not remember where he was—or who he was supposed to be. When he tried to sit up, iron bands clinked softly. His wrists were bound. “Easy, half-blood.” The voice came from the darkness ahead. Elias’s eyes adjusted slowly, and the cave revealed itself. Stone walls curved like the ribs of a giant beast, glowing faintly with blue symbols carved deep into the rock. Firelight flickered, casting long shadows that moved like living things. A tall figure stepped forward. He was broad-shouldered, with ash-gray hair tied back and eyes that glowed faintly silver even in human form. “You’re awake sooner than expected,” the man said. “That’s a good sign.” Elias pulled against the chains, panic rising in his chest. “Who are you? Where am I?” “You are in Blackroot Hollow,” the man replied calmly. “And I am Kael—Beta of the Nightclaw Pack.” At the word pack, Elias’s heart slammed against his ribs. Memories flooded back: the pain, the moon, the voice in the forest, the eyes watching him from the shadows. “You’re wolves,” Elias said hoarsely. Kael nodded. “So are you.” “No,” Elias snapped. “I hunt wolves.” A murmur rippled through the cave. Figures stepped out of the darkness—men and women, young and old, all watching him with wary, glowing eyes. Some looked curious. Others looked afraid. Kael raised a hand, silencing them. “You were raised among humans. That much is clear. But blood does not lie.” He moved closer, studying Elias like a puzzle. “You transformed last night. Not fully—but enough.” Elias swallowed. “What am I?” The Beta hesitated, then spoke the words that would forever change Elias’s life. “You are a hybrid. Half human. Half werewolf.” The cave fell silent. “That’s impossible,” Elias whispered. “I’ve heard the stories. Hybrids die at birth.” “Most do,” Kael said. “Which is why your existence is dangerous.” “Dangerous to who?” Elias demanded. “To everyone.” A woman stepped forward. She was slender, with dark skin and hair braided tightly down her back. Her eyes glowed gold, sharp and intelligent. “I am Lira,” she said. “The Alpha’s mate.” Elias’s breath caught. “Where is your Alpha?” Lira’s expression darkened. “Dead. Killed by hunters three winters ago.” Guilt stabbed through Elias’s chest. He had hunted wolves for years. He had taken lives without knowing their names. Kael continued, “Our laws are ancient. No hybrid may live without the Alpha’s judgment. Some believe you are an abomination. Others believe you are a prophecy.” “A prophecy?” Elias echoed. Lira nodded slowly. “Old legends speak of a wolf born between worlds—one who can walk in sunlight without burning, one who can command both man and beast.” Elias laughed bitterly. “You’ve got the wrong person.” “Do we?” Kael asked. Suddenly, the cave trembled. Dust fell from the ceiling. A deep, resonant growl echoed through the stone—not from one throat, but many. “The council has arrived,” Lira said quietly. From the far end of the cave, three elders approached. Their presence alone made the air heavy. Their eyes burned brighter than the others, filled with age and power. The oldest stepped forward. “Release him.” Kael unlocked the chains. Elias rubbed his wrists, every instinct screaming at him to run—but something stronger rooted him in place. “You were born under a blood moon,” the elder said. “Your father was a wolf king. Your mother, a human.” Elias froze. “That’s a lie.” “It is the truth,” the elder replied. “And because of it, you carry a power we do not understand.” Another elder leaned closer. “The hunters will come for you. They always do.” “And when they do,” the first elder finished, “you must choose who you truly are.” Elias felt the wolf stir inside him—restless, angry, alive. For the first time in his life, he realized something terrifying. He had never been human enough. And now, he might not be wolf enough either. But one thing was certain. There was no turning back.
