Betrayal under silver

1123 Words
The first sign that something was wrong came with the wind. It shifted abruptly just before dawn, carrying a scent that did not belong—cold metal, oil, and the faint bite of silver. Elias woke instantly, eyes snapping open as the wolf inside him surged to attention. Hunters. He was on his feet before the alarm sounded. A horn blast ripped through Blackroot Hollow, deep and urgent. Wolves poured from sleeping chambers, some already shifting mid-stride, bones cracking as fur tore through skin. The blue symbols carved into the cave walls flared bright, reacting to danger. Kael appeared beside Elias, blade already in hand. “They’re too close,” he growled. “Too precise.” Elias’s jaw tightened. “Someone led them.” Kael looked at him sharply. “You’re sure?” “I can smell the trail,” Elias said. “It didn’t break the wards. It walked through them.” That was impossible—unless the wards had been opened from within. Before Kael could respond, an explosion thundered at the eastern entrance. Stone shattered. Smoke poured into the cave, followed by screams. “Defensive lines!” Kael shouted. The Nightclaw Pack moved as one, but the hunters were ready this time. Silver nets flew through the smoke, glowing faintly as they tightened around struggling wolves. Runes flared. Bullets screamed. Elias fought with a clarity that shocked even him. He moved between forms instinctively—human speed and wolf strength blending seamlessly. He tore nets apart with bare hands, dragged wounded wolves to safety, disarmed hunters before they could reload. But there were too many. “Fall back!” Lira shouted from across the chamber. “Protect the elders!” Elias spun toward the elder’s chamber—and froze. A familiar figure stood at the threshold. Taren. He was one of the younger wolves, barely past his first full transformation. Quiet. Observant. Elias remembered how Taren had watched him during the Alpha’s Trial with something like awe. Now his eyes were hollow. And in his hand was a silver flare. “Taren?” Elias shouted over the chaos. “What are you doing?” Taren flinched—but didn’t lower the flare. “I warned them,” he said hoarsely. “I showed them the paths.” Kael stared at him in disbelief. “You betrayed us?” “They promised protection!” Taren snapped. “They said hybrids would bring destruction. That he would!” He pointed shakily at Elias. Elias felt the words like a blade to the chest. “You didn’t even know me.” “That’s the point!” Taren screamed. “You’re a weapon they don’t understand—and neither are we anymore!” The flare ignited. Light exploded through the chamber, blinding white and burning silver. Elias screamed as pain tore through his senses. He dropped to one knee, claws scraping stone. In that moment of chaos, hunters surged forward. “Target the hybrid!” a voice barked. Elias felt hands grab him—silver restraints snapping shut around his wrists and throat. His strength faltered, wolf and human both screaming as the metal burned. Kael charged, slamming into the hunters restraining Elias, but a silver-tipped blade pierced his side. He staggered, roaring in fury. “No!” Elias shouted. “Kael—!” A rifle butt slammed into Elias’s head. The world went dark. Elias came back to consciousness slowly, pain blooming everywhere at once. He lay bound in a reinforced steel cage etched with glowing runes. The air reeked of silver so thick it made breathing difficult. Every movement sent fire through his veins. Outside the cage, boots approached. Rowan Black stepped into view. “Good morning,” Rowan said calmly. “Or whatever passes for it underground.” Elias struggled weakly, teeth bared. “You used him.” Rowan tilted his head. “Children are easy to convince when you tell them they’re afraid for the right reasons.” “Taren trusted you,” Elias growled. Rowan shrugged. “Trust is a luxury monsters can’t afford.” Elias glared at him through the bars. “You’ll never win.” Rowan crouched in front of the cage. “I already have. The Nightclaws are broken. Their elders are scattered. And you…” He smiled thinly. “You’re coming with me.” Elias laughed despite the pain. “You’re afraid of me.” “Yes,” Rowan said simply. “That’s why I’m going to study you. Figure out how to kill your kind permanently.” Footsteps echoed behind Rowan. Mira stepped into the torchlight. Elias’s heart stopped. “Mira?” he breathed. “Run.” She didn’t. Her face was pale, eyes wide with horror. “They told me you were dangerous,” she whispered. “That you were part of this.” Rowan straightened. “Miss Hale volunteered to help us navigate the forest. She didn’t know you were involved.” Mira’s gaze snapped to Rowan. “You said you were tracking beasts.” Rowan didn’t deny it. Elias forced himself upright, ignoring the agony. “Mira, listen to me. You’re not safe here.” She stepped closer to the cage, studying the burns on his wrists, the pain he was trying to hide. “They did this to you,” she said. “Yes,” Elias replied softly. “And they’ll do it to anyone who’s different.” Something shifted in her eyes. Rowan noticed too. “Enough,” he said sharply. “Step back.” Mira didn’t. “You lied,” she said, voice trembling. “My father wouldn’t have worked with people like this.” Rowan’s expression hardened. “Your father is dead because wolves killed him.” Elias snarled. “That’s a lie.” Rowan spun on him. “Silence!” Mira’s breath hitched. “What do you mean… a lie?” Rowan didn’t answer. That was answer enough. Outside the cage, alarms suddenly blared. Shouts echoed. Explosions rocked the compound. Kael’s howl cut through the air—raw, furious, alive. Rowan cursed under his breath. “They found us.” Mira looked between Elias and the chaos, fear and determination warring on her face. Elias met her eyes. “You have to choose.” She swallowed hard—then reached for the cage lock. Rowan drew his weapon. “Don’t.” Mira turned to him, shaking but resolute. “I already have.” The lock clicked. The silver restraints fell away. Pain vanished in a rush of heat and fury. Elias rose, eyes blazing gold. Behind him, the cage door swung open. And somewhere above, the Nightclaw Pack came for blood. The betrayal had been paid in silver. Now it would be answered in fire
