Chapter 79

1531 Words

The air outside was crisp and cool against my skin. Stars littered the sky above. I turned in time to see Jay’s goofy smile. “Goodnight.” I grinned back and waved as Pepper stepped out onto the patio with me. “If you aren’t back by morning, I’m coming for you.” Jay’s smile widened, as if he liked the idea. I nodded, and Pepper slid the glass door closed. “Keep the light on, House.” She patted the wall, and I frowned. Is she talking to her house? This night might be weirder than I thought. “It’s this way.” She pointed out to the woods and walked off. As I followed her, my eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness. The moon was barely present in the sky, and the pines blocked it from view anyway. I followed right behind Pepper so I wouldn’t trip on branches or other random junk in the woods.
