Chapter 9.

Savannah’s mind was a whirlwind, but Logan’s kiss anchored her, even if just for a moment. She pulled back, searching his eyes. “Who hired you?” Logan hesitated. “I don’t know their real name. They go by ‘The Broker.’ They operate in the shadows, pulling strings for powerful people. All I know is that they believe you have something—a secret, a piece of information—that could ruin them.” Savannah shook her head, pacing the room. “That’s impossible. I’m nobody. I’m a freelance graphic designer, Logan. My biggest secret is that I sometimes eat ice cream for breakfast.” Logan’s lips quirked into a brief, sad smile. “I didn’t believe it either at first. But The Broker doesn’t make mistakes. There’s something about you... or someone close to you.” Her heart dropped. “My family?” she whispered. “Maybe,” Logan said softly. “But I swear to you, Savannah, the moment I met you, everything changed. I tried to keep my distance, to do the job... but you—” He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “You got under my skin.” Savannah’s chest tightened. She wanted to believe him, but the sting of betrayal still lingered. “So, what now? Are they still watching?” Logan’s jaw clenched. “Yes. And when they realize I’m not delivering what they want... they’ll come for you.” Fear flickered through her. “So, what do we do?” “We run,” Logan said firmly. “I know people who can help. But we have to leave. Tonight.” Her eyes widened. “Leave? Just like that?” “I won’t let anything happen to you,” Logan whispered, stepping closer. “I don’t care what it takes.” Savannah’s heart pounded. She knew her life had changed the moment Logan entered it. Now, there was no turning back. “Okay,” she whispered, gripping his hand tightly. “Let’s go.” But neither of them noticed the tiny red light blinking on a nearby security camera—until it was too late.
