Guts - 8

I’m gonna throw up, and when I do I’m makin’ sure it’s coming straight for you Reggie. I think while glaring between him and the dead body in front of us. He puts his mask over his face and breaks the glass that covers the emergency axe. I think at this moment we all slightly hate Reg and all feel disgusted doing this, but hey! This is what we need to, no, have to do, to survive. We are all looking down at the body in front of us as Reginald lifts the axe, preparing himself to come down with all this strength before he stops himself, ripping his mask off and throwing it on the floor along with the axe. He reaches into the pocket of the Walker and pulls out his wallet. “Wayne Dunlap. Georgia license. Born in nineteen seventy-two. He had $twenty-eight dollars in his pocket when he died, and a picture of a pretty girl. ‘With love, from Rachel’. He used to be like us… Worrying about bills or the rent or the Super Bowl… If I ever find my family, I'm gonna tell them about Wayne...” Reginald says as he looks at me then puts the wallet back, puts his mask back on and grabs the axe. “One more thing. He was an organ donor.” David adds. Reginald takes a breath begging finally swinging the axe, the axe sinking into the Walkers chest. We’re all grunting and groaning with the occasional ‘Oh!’ and ‘God!’ here and there as he dissects a human body with a fire axe. “Madre de Dios!” Moe mutters to himself as he does the sign of the cross. “Oh!” Trinity adds every time Reg takes a swing. “Gack!” Reginald yells every time something gets chopped off. “Oh my God!” David gags, putting his hands on his head. All of us look ‘bout ready to puke, but somehow we hold it in, even with that god-awful stench in the air. “Oh! God! Gack! Oh God.” Reginald heaves as he takes his mask off and wipes his face on his sleeve. He hands the mask and axe to Moe, who looks like he’s gonna cry or puke, maybe a little bit of both? “Keep chopping.” He tells him. “Ahh I am so gonna hurl.” David says with his hands on his knees. “Later.” Reginald tells him as Moe begins where Reginald left off, “Everybody got gloves? Don't get any on your skin or in your eyes.” He tells the group as we bend down and pick up bits and pieces of chopped up Walker. Great! This is my favourite part of Reginald's genius plan, rubbing the s**t onto us! I think as Jacqui comes over towards me and starts rubbing guts onto my rain suit. Reginald and I are almost covered as David continues to make noises. “Ohhh! Ahhh! Ewww! Oh God! Oh this is bad, it’s really bad.” He moans as they place some of the intestines around him. “Think about something else. Puppies and kittens.” Reginald says trying to calm David down. “Dead puppies and kittens…” Tre adds, and with that David vomits, and I’m quick to follow. “That is just evil. What is wrong with you?” Trinity complains. “Next time let the cracker beat his ass.” Jacqui mocks. “I’m sorry, yo.” Tre tries to apologize. “Awww, you suck.” David shakes his head. “No argument there.” I agree, wiping my mouth. “Do we smell like them?” Reginald asks. Captain Obvious strikes again, I think to myself trying not to throw up again. “Oh Yeah!” Trinity says, “David, just in case.” She adds while giving him her gun. She lifts up his shirt and tucks it in his belt. “If we make it back, be ready.” Reginald says. If. “What about Earle Dougherty?” Tre asks causing everyone to look at me, I look at Reginald and nod my head. Reginald goes into his pocket and pulls out a tiny key and throws at Tre. He catches it and puts it in his pocket. “Give me the axe.” Reginald tells Moe, “We need more guts.” “Really?” I groan as he chops again. **** At this point, 0 we are covered head to toe in Walker guts, blood, and body parts. The three of us walk out as Moe closes the door. As we start walking down the alley two Walkers look at us, Reginald holds the axe tightly as David and I raise our bats. They slowly start to limp and walk away; thank god nothing happens. As we walk down the alleyway, I notice a huge bus blocking the city street. I look over at Reginald and he motions for us to crawl under it. This day just keeps getting better and better, don’t it? I think as we get to the other side. There’s a lot of Walkers out here, I think to myself as the sound of thunder gets louder and louder. The construction site is a few blocks away. A good, long walk as we try to not bring any attention to us, the storm clouds rolling in closer and closer. “It's gonna work. I can't believe it.” David whispers. “Don't draw attention.” Reginald whispers back as a Walker grunts at David and he mimics the sound. I can’t believe it’s working either; these things are stupider than Earle and I didn’t think it was even possible to be stupider than Earle. I’m brought out of my thoughts when I felt a fat raindrop land on my nose. “s**t,” I whisper as the rain starts to downpour heavily, lightning and thunder wrestling behind the clouds. I look down and notice the rain washing off our walker camouflage. “Reggie, the s**t’s washin’ off.” I whisper as I pull on his arm, he looks down and then back at me. “No, it's not.” He denies. “Isn't it? Is it washing off?” David asks desperately. “No, it's not… Well, maybe.” Reg shrugs as the Walkers start to stare and growl at us. One goes after Reginald and he hits it in the head with his axe. “RUN!” He yells as we race down the end of the road with the hoard of Walkers not too far behind us. Every so often we have to kill a few that get a little too close for comfort. Then we start sprinting, the construction site is literally right in front of us. We throw the tools over the fence and climb over, just before the Walkers get to the fence. We rip off our coats, and David and I get the keys out of the box as Reginald shoots down the Walkers trying to climb the fence. “Reg!” I yell as I throw him a set of keys, he catches it and we run to the truck. Just as David closes his door a Walker attacks the window. “Go! Go! Go!” David yells as Reginald reverses out of the site. “God! Oh God! they’re all over that place!” David starts to freak out. “You need to draw them away.” Reginald tells David, “Those roll-up doors at the front of the store that area? That's what I need cleared. Raise your friends. Tell them to get down there and be ready.” “And I'm drawing the geeks away how? I… I missed that part!” David yells. “Noise.” I explain as Reginald drives faster. We search the streets for a few minutes looking for a driveable car. David points out a red sports car and Reg pulls over. We climb out and Reg smashes the window, alarm blaring through the street. Reg opens the door, easily hotwiring it before standing before us. “David, you take Kathryne and lead the Walkers away from the garage! Kat, I need you to go with David! Time you two do some bonding!” Reginald yells over the very loud alarm, giving me a quick hug. “Be careful!” He says both of us. “You to old man!” I joke as David drives off. “This should be interesting.” I say to David as I tighten my seat belt. “Yep!” David pulls out his walkie-talkie, “Those roll-up doors at the front of the store facing the street. Meet us there and be ready.” He informs the others waiting back at the store. “Here we go.” David says as we overtake Reginald’s truck. We drive all the way down to the main road where the huge group of Walkers are. “Showtime.” I say as David reverses into the street, causing all the Walkers to attack the car. “Come on! Get closer, come on!” David grunts trying to keep the car steady as we back up into more Walkers as they appear. “Let’s go David!” I yell as the Walkers start to gain speed. David pulls a 180 and we drive off, “this is actually kinda fun.” He says. “Yeah, if you take away the part of hundreds of Walkers chasin’ us and tryin’ to eat us. Then yeah it’s kinda fun.” I tease. Reginald’s P.O.V When I arrive in the alley, mostly all the Walkers are gone. “Looks like David and Kat did a pretty good job.” I say to myself as I reverse into the loading docks. I throw the cube truck into park and rush to the back, throwing the door open and jumping off. I bang on the door a few times, keeping an eye out of walkers and the door opens. “Come on!” I yell as Tre throws me bags which I throw into the truck. Everyone pilling into the back. “They're here! Let's go! They're in here!” Tre yells continually, the last to leave the building. “Let's go! We've gotta go!” I yell as Moe jumps into the back, all of us are panting and gasping for air as I climb into the driver's seat, switching gears and taking off. I look back to see if the hatch is closed only to see Walkers flood through the docks, I hit the gas and I hear the hatch slam shut. The drive through the city is quiet, no one says a word, leaving the city Moe joins me upfront. I offer him a smile before looking back at the group and that’s when I notice that one foul-mouthed redneck is missing, but I dare not say anything. “I dropped the damn key.” Tre speaks up, his voice cracking slightly as tears filled his eyes. We all remain silent. I don’t take it these people had any strong feelings for the man, certainly not after the show I watched him put on. Christ, what is Kathryne gonna do when she finds out? “Where's David? And the girl…?” I’m brought out of my thoughts by Trinity’s question. “In another car, making their own way up. They’re fine.” I answer, looking at her through the extremely useless rear-view mirror. “Best not to dwell on it,” Moe says lightly, placing a hand on my shoulder briefly. “Earle got left behind. Nobody's gonna be sad he didn't come back… Except maybe Deacon and,” he pauses for a moment, trying to remember her name before snapping. “Katherine.” “Deacon?” I ask. “His brother,” Moe explains, and Kathryne’s father. I get distracted by the sound of David’s car alarm and engine coming up from behind. Taking full advantage of the horsepower and open road. They zoom past us, both of them screaming on the way. “Whoo-hoo! Yeah! Whoo-hoo!” “At least somebody's having a good day.” Moe says.
