Adelaide’s Point of View
Kai and I were riding over to the pack house for dinner to celebrate our baby girl’s graduation. My hand was throbbing and I was flexing and stretching my fingers as Kai drove.
“Sweetness, you shouldn’t have let her get to you like that.” He was giving me his all knowing yoda face and I was not feeling it.
“Baby, do you know what she said to Paisley the other day?” I countered. His face turned to a look of concern, I knew I had struck a nerve, he was protective of that baby girl.
“What?” He asked.
“She said that her parents died in that fire rather than being stuck with ‘a worthless orphan mutt.’ She got a couple good shots in after that, I’m proud of her.” I could see the rage take over his face as his hands gripped the steering wheel tighter and his knuckles started turning white. “Baby, you okay?”
“Ya sweetness, I take it back, I’m proud of you baby. I love that you stood up for our baby girl. That girl don’ dug her own grave.” We were pulling up to the pack house now and I could see Augustine and Paisley just getting out of the car. Kai jumped out of the car like a bolt of lightning marching over to Paisley, I started to chuckle as I got out of the truck as I overheard their conversation.
“Baby girl!” Kai was on a mission. Paisley turned and looked at him in horror like she was in some kinda trouble. He grabbed her face and started to check her over, looking at the bruise along her hair line where Hannah had made a decent connection with her fist. He ran his fingers over it gently to assess the damage, Paisley winced slightly.
“Are you okay? Dede told me what happened with Hannah, before this afternoon.” He had a look of a concerned Dad written all over his face and it was melting my heart. I could see Paisley’s eyes filling with tears, and she started to laugh a little.
“Ya Pops, I’m okay, I let her give me a few but then I threw down just like Dede taught me.” Pride took over Kai as he looked over her hands to check for bruising and cuts.
“That’s my girl.” He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and followed Augustine into the house and I followed after them all. It might be time to give this man a pup of his own.
I walked into the house and it was like heaven had met my nose.
“Mama, something smells amazing in here!” I yelled from the foyer. Everyone had headed into the living-room to watch whatever was playing on the TV.
“Hi babae, come in here and help me, I need another set of hands, I hope I made enough food.”
I walked into the kitchen to see the island completely covered in food from one end to the other.
“Who are we feeding Mama? The entire state of Louisiana?” I laughed.
“You never know Babae, better to have too much than too little, especially with these boys and their appetites.” She smiled.
“And this is why you’re the Mama. Now what can I help with?” I looked at her ready to jump in.
“I need that pie taken out of the oven and help me move everything over to the dining room table. Then I need you to go call everyone into the dining room for dinner.” She was headed to the china cabinet for the nice plates and the fancy flatware.
“I’m on it Mama.” I grabbed the oven mitts and pulled the pie out and set it down on the stove top to cool, I placed the mitts down on the counter beside the stove and headed towards the living-room to summon the horde.
“Alright y’all, suppers ready.” Everyone got up at once and headed for the dining room and grabbed a seat and started dishing up. Kai spoke to get everyone’s attention.
“Alright everyone, before we dig into this beautiful dinner that Mama has made, thank you mama, I would just like to say how proud we all are of you Paisley, you have really come so far, and overcome so much in your life at such a young age. We all love you and hope you had a memorable graduation, minus the fighting. To Paisley!” Kai raised his glass and everyone chanted in response. Paisley looked like she was going to cry again. My heart was so full at this moment with all the love in this room. I knew that we could overcome anything as long as we came together as a family.
After supper was over, all the girls helped clear the table and I was loading the dishwasher when Kai came into the kitchen.
“Hey baby.” I smiled from across the island.
“Hey sweetness, I think the guys are getting ready to take off. Do you need anything before I leave?” Goddess, what did I ever do to deserve such a thoughtful man.
“Nah baby, you go and have fun on your ‘guys night’.” I giggled knowing that Kai was not excited to spend the night with a bunch of dudes. He would rather be at home with me, between my legs or sitting on the porch swing drinking sweet tea watching the sunset.
“You sure you can’t ditch and just come home? I’ll tell the guys it’s cancelled due to a natural disaster.”
“And what natural disaster are you planning on?” I looked at him quizzically.
“The flood I’m gonna start between your legs if you decide to stay home.” He grinned like Satan himself.
“Oh my goddess, you better get your dirty mouth outta my sight right now Kai Blackwood, this is your Mama’s house! Don’t be talkin’ like that. I’m not even going to be gone for that long now move along and have fun. I’ll call you when I’m on my way home.” I chased him out of the kitchen with a towel, whipping at the backs of his legs.
Kai pouted and planted a kiss on my mouth, pulled me tight to his body and grabbed my ass before he turned around to join the guys gathered at the door.
“Bye Dede! Watch out for Paisley please.” Augustine said as they made their way out of the front door.
“I will sugar, don’t worry. We won’t get into any trouble.” I waved them off.
I could hear the truck start in the driveway and not a minute later the music started pumping from upstairs as the girls started getting ready for girls night out. Goddess, give me strength, these girls are gonna be trouble tonight.
