Scene 5: The Catalyst – An Unexpected Attack

1060 Words
The academy’s training arena, which is set up for a special event—a mock battle tournament for the students, with teams formed across various power sets. The event is meant to help students practice teamwork and strategize, but something goes terribly wrong. Lyra’s POV: She’s standing off to the side of the arena, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. The other students are preparing for the matches, but she isn’t interested in competing. She didn’t sign up for this; she didn’t want to draw any more attention to herself than necessary. She’s here for one reason—to make sure Elias doesn’t wander in again. Her little brother, Elias, had tried to sneak into the academy again this morning, which had caused a minor panic. Their parents didn’t know he was here, and Lyra couldn’t afford to let anything happen to him, especially when the academy was full of people who could easily sense her power. She knew he’d be at the event, probably trying to catch a glimpse of her, and she wasn’t about to let anyone see how much she cared. The air in the arena is thick with anticipation. Students are paired off in teams and getting ready for the simulated battle. Lyra’s gaze flicks over the crowd, making sure Elias is nowhere in sight. That’s when she sees him—her childhood friend. He’s already locked in his match, getting ready to fight with a grin on his face. Her heart stirs briefly. She’s not sure why, but the sight of him so casually participating in this tournament irritates her. She’s not interested in him or the spectacle of the fight. What matters right now is Elias. Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet shakes. Her Childhood Friend’s POV (briefly): He feels it first. The ground trembles, just a slight vibration at first, like a distant earthquake. But the tremor grows stronger. The students begin murmuring in confusion. He looks around, trying to figure out what’s going on. His eyes narrow when he sees Lyra’s tense posture across the field. There’s something in the air that feels wrong. Lyra’s POV (continued): The tremors grow stronger, and for a split second, she wonders if this is just a training exercise—some sort of simulation. But then the realization hits. Something is wrong. Her heart skips a beat as the ground cracks open near the edge of the arena. Students scream and scramble for cover. A strange, dark energy begins to surge from the crack—unnatural, alien, and full of malice. It doesn’t take long for the first student to fall into the chasm that’s rapidly widening beneath their feet. It’s no drill. It’s real. Her protective instincts kick in before she even has a chance to think. She turns toward the stands, searching for Elias. She spots him at the edge of the arena, watching in awe as the chaos unfolds. And then she sees it—someone—a figure emerging from the dark energy, standing tall and menacing. It’s a person, but not. Their body flickers with an eerie, otherworldly glow. Lyra doesn’t wait. Lyra’s POV (continued): With her heart hammering, she races toward the arena’s edge, using her speed to get there before anyone else can. She’s not about to lose Elias. She pushes past students who are too slow to move, who are panicking. The figure—the enemy—raises its hand toward the stands, and for a split second, Lyra sees its eyes glowing with intent. No. Her mind flashes to Elias, still standing too close to the danger. Lyra snaps into action. Lyra’s POV – Unleashing Her Power: Her pulse races as she skids to a stop just in front of Elias. The figure turns toward her, sensing her presence. Its malevolent gaze lands on Lyra, but she doesn’t hesitate. This is the moment. She holds her hand out, palm open, and the air around her ripples with raw energy—the kind of energy that would break the earth in two if she unleashed it fully. But she doesn’t. She channels it, focusing all of her willpower into one blast. The ground shakes beneath her feet as she releases a shockwave of pure power, invisible but devastating. It sends the figure flying back, crashing into the stands, knocking down several others in its path. The entire arena quakes under the force of her attack. For a moment, everything goes still. The students are frozen, staring at her with wide eyes. But Lyra doesn’t care. Her breath is ragged, her body shaking from the effort, but Elias is safe. For now. Her Childhood Friend’s POV: He’s watching in stunned silence. He’s seen Lyra fight before, but this—this was different. The sheer force of her attack radiated power unlike anything he’s ever felt. He’s caught between awe and disbelief. The students around him are in chaos, running in every direction, trying to escape or get help. But Lyra—Lyra is standing tall in the middle of the arena, her eyes fixed on the enemy. He sees her breathing heavily, her body tense, like she’s ready to do it again. Lyra’s POV (continued): She’s already turning, looking back to make sure Elias is safe. She’s about to move toward him again when she feels a sharp pain in her chest. The effort of using even a fraction of her power has drained her more than she expected. Her vision blurs, and her knees almost give way beneath her. It’s been too long since she’s let any of this out. But before she can collapse, she feels a steadying hand on her shoulder. Her Childhood Friend’s POV (continued): He’s there, his hand on her shoulder, his face serious. “Lyra,” he says, his voice low, “What the hell was that?” She doesn’t respond. She can’t. She doesn’t want to explain herself—not to him, not to anyone. She pulls away from his grip, forcing herself to stand straight. “Just stay out of this,” she says, her voice cold. “This is my fight.” But she knows, deep down, that this event is only the beginning. There’s a reason this attack happened now. And it has something to do with her family—the same family she’s been hiding from everyone.
