Tracy staggered backward a few steps, one hand pressed to her chest. She looked terrified, yet her voice suddenly rang through the room.
"Laura, I-I was only doing what I was told. Y-You can't lash out at me just because you can't accept this!"
I crossed my arms and watched her with an icy stare as she put on her little act. She really knew how to perform. She looked ready to cry at any second.
"Tracy, what happened?"
An angry roar came from outside. A moment later, Tony stormed in with a group of executives behind him. His eyes swept over the cup lid on the floor, Tracy's reddened eyes, then locked onto me with a furious glare.
"Laura, what do you think you're doing? Tracy's the employee I just promoted. Even if you've got a problem with me, you can't bully a new hire! I've already called security. Go ahead and make one more move!"
"The director got replaced by a rookie and totally snapped."
"She didn't dare challenge the boss, so she took it out on the weakest person."
"Seriously. That's unbelievably vicious."
The executives all wore eager smiles, clearly enjoying the show. A few even lifted their phones and started filming.
"What a bunch of fools!" I let out a sneer and tilted my chin toward the doorway. "She isn't worth me lifting a finger. If you want the truth, just pull up the security footage."
Last month, the Administration Department installed a camera in my office, claiming it was because this office held important company materials and needed tighter security. Looking back, it was obviously there to keep an eye on me and wait for me to slip up. Too bad for them, because now that same camera had become the best evidence to clear my name.
The crowd looked at my calm expression before shifting their attention to Tracy.
A flicker of panic crossed Tracy's face. She quickly moved beside Tony, pointed at me, and cried out, "Laura, did you just call Tony a fool?"
"Laura!" Tony's face instantly turned livid. He marched over and brought his palm down hard on the desk.
The coffee cup crashed onto the floor, and Tony's disappointed accusations immediately followed.
"Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you're a founding employee! You skipped classes all through college and barely had any real skills. If I hadn't given you a job because we were classmates, you would've probably ended up with nothing by now! I've tolerated your arrogance for years, and now you actually dare to attack me personally? Do you even have any idea what gratitude means?"
He completely distorted the facts. The angrier I became, the more ridiculous it felt. I pointed at the wall covered with achievement trophies and photos of me signing major deals with clients.
"Who exactly is the one without any gratitude? Let's not even talk about anything else. Which client here wasn't brought in by me? When Vincent handed this company that group contract, who was the one who told me, 'Laura, this company needs you'? Do you want me to pull up the messages and put them on the screen for everyone to see?"
Tony's lips parted, but no words came out. He couldn't even meet my eyes.
"Landing clients isn't some impossible task," Tracy stepped forward once again, giving Tony a sweet smile. "Tony, don't worry. I used AI to rent a top tier Cullinan, and we've already shown our VIP guests the highest level of respect. With this kind of sincerity, that $200 million order is basically guaranteed."
I let out a laugh, "The Cullinan is certainly a great car. But Vincent is a billionaire. What do you think he hasn't experienced? Do you really believe he chose to work with me all these years because I drove a luxury car?"
Tony's expression flickered with uncertainty.
Tracy sneered, "You don't need to act like there's some hidden secret. Aren't you just afraid I'll use the Cullinan to make our reception look more impressive and help the company complete its second half KPI ahead of time?"
Tony smiled and patted her shoulder, "Keep it up. The company will recognize your efforts."
The executives immediately chimed in with their approval.
"That's fantastic. Maybe this year's bonus will finally be worth looking forward to."
Tracy raised her chin proudly and stared down at me. "Laura, don't even think about quitting. I want you to stand there and watch as I take every single one of your VIP clients away."
I glanced around the room at their delighted expressions. They all looked like they had already received their bonus checks. I couldn't help but curve my lips into a smile.
Great. I can't wait to see the expression on your faces when everything you've planned falls apart.
"Relax. I have no intention of resigning." I slipped my phone back into my bag, stood up, and headed toward the door. "I'm taking annual leave starting today. No matter how urgent something is at work, don't contact me."
Behind me, Tracy called out confidently, "The day I secure Vincent's deal, I'll call you and invite you to the celebration dinner. You'd better come."
I didn't turn around. I simply waved my hand.
'Sure. I'll be there. I can't wait to watch your performance.'
