Chapter 2:The First Cracks

2331 Words
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Mendoza mansion. Julia woke with a smile. The success of the previous night still lingered in her mind. The merger had gone through. The investors were pleased. The company's future looked brighter than ever. Everything seemed perfect. Beside her, Adrian was already awake. He sat at the edge of the bed scrolling through his phone. When he noticed Julia stirring, he immediately locked the screen. "Morning, beautiful." Julia smiled. "Morning." She stretched lazily before sitting up. "What time is it?" "Almost seven." Her eyes widened. "Seven?" Adrian laughed. "The CEO is late." Julia groaned dramatically. "I have three meetings before noon." "You'll survive." She threw a pillow at him. He caught it effortlessly. The playful moment felt natural. Comfortable. Like any ordinary married couple. But beneath the surface, Adrian's heart raced. A message had arrived less than ten minutes ago. The transfer was complete. Millions had already moved through shell companies created months earlier. Everything was proceeding according to plan. And Julia suspected nothing. Not yet. --- Two hours later, Julia entered the towering headquarters of Mendoza Group. The glass skyscraper stood proudly in the center of the financial district. Employees immediately greeted her. "Good morning, Ms. Mendoza." "Congratulations on the merger." "You were amazing last night." Julia smiled warmly at everyone. Unlike many executives, she remembered names. She knew employees personally. That was why people respected her. Inside the executive elevator, her assistant Emma handed over a tablet. "Your schedule for today." Julia glanced through it. Board meeting. Investor conference. Financial review. Department reports. The usual. As the elevator rose toward the top floor, Emma hesitated. "There's something else." Julia looked up. "What is it?" Emma frowned. "The accounting department requested clarification on several authorizations." Julia's eyebrows knitted together. "What authorizations?" Emma quickly opened another file. "Large asset transfers." Julia blinked. "What transfers?" Emma looked confused. "The ones approved under your signature." A strange feeling settled in Julia's stomach. "Bring the documents to my office." "Already done." The elevator doors opened. For the first time that morning, Julia felt uneasy. --- Thirty minutes later, she sat behind her desk reviewing the files. Her office occupied the entire top floor. The city stretched endlessly beyond the glass walls. Normally, she enjoyed the view. Today, she barely noticed it. Her attention remained fixed on the documents. Page after page. Transfer approvals. Investment authorizations. Corporate restructuring agreements. Each carried her signature. Yet she couldn't remember signing them. "That's impossible." Emma shifted uncomfortably. "Is something wrong?" Julia stared at the papers. "No." Then she corrected herself. "Actually, yes." Emma's eyes widened. "Should I call legal?" "Not yet." Julia flipped through another file. The signature was definitely hers. No forgery. No manipulation. Her actual signature. Yet something felt off. Very off. "When were these processed?" Emma checked her notes. "Over the last several weeks." Julia leaned back. Several weeks. That explained it. She had been overwhelmed preparing the merger. Dozens of documents crossed her desk daily. Perhaps she simply forgot. Still... The feeling remained. A tiny crack in the foundation of her certainty. A tiny warning. One she would soon regret ignoring. --- Meanwhile, across town, Luna sat inside a luxury café. Her eyes sparkled as she reviewed messages from Adrian. Phase one completed. Everything remains on schedule. Luna smiled. The words felt beautiful. For years she had dreamed about taking everything from Julia. Now that dream was becoming reality. The waiter approached. "Would you like another coffee?" "Yes." The waiter nodded and left. Moments later, Adrian entered the café. He wore sunglasses and a baseball cap. A ridiculous disguise. Yet surprisingly effective. Luna laughed as he sat down. "You look like a criminal." Adrian smirked. "Maybe I am." The joke wasn't entirely inaccurate. Luna leaned forward. "How did she react?" "To what?" "The transfers." Adrian shrugged. "Confused." Luna's smile widened. "Suspicious?" "Not yet." They exchanged a look. Months of planning. Months of manipulation. Months of patience. Everything was finally paying off. "Good," Luna said. "Very good." --- Back at Mendoza Group, Julia tried to focus on work. But the documents continued bothering her. During lunch, she called the Chief Financial Officer. An hour later, he arrived carrying several additional reports. "Sit down." The older man obeyed immediately. Julia handed him the files. "I need answers." The CFO adjusted his glasses. "What would you like to know?" "These transfers." The man examined the documents. "What about them?" "Why weren't they brought directly to me?" His expression changed. "They were." Julia froze. "What?" The CFO pointed toward the signatures. "You personally approved every transaction." Silence filled the office. Julia looked down again. The signatures. The dates. Everything appeared legitimate. The CFO continued. "There didn't seem to be any issue." Julia forced a smile. "Of course." The meeting ended shortly afterward. But the unease remained. Stronger now. Much stronger. Something wasn't right. She just couldn't prove it. Yet. --- That evening, Julia arrived home exhausted. The moment she entered the mansion, she heard laughter. Luna's laughter. A smile appeared on her face. Her sister was visiting. Good. She needed a distraction. Following the sound, Julia entered the living room. Luna sat comfortably on the sofa. Adrian occupied the chair opposite her. They immediately stopped laughing when Julia entered. The reaction lasted less than a second. But Julia noticed. A strange silence. A brief awkwardness. Then both smiled. "Julia!" Luna exclaimed. "You scared me." Julia laughed. "What are you two talking about?" "Nothing important." Adrian answered too quickly. Again. The strange feeling returned. Only briefly. Then disappeared. Luna stood and hugged her. "How was work?" "Busy." Julia collapsed onto the sofa. "I'm starting to think the merger is trying to kill me." Everyone laughed. Yet behind Luna's smile, satisfaction burned. Because if everything went according to plan... The merger wasn't what would destroy Julia. They would. END OF CHAPTER 2 – PART 1 CLIFFHANGER: As Julia headed upstairs later that night, she accidentally dropped her phone near the staircase. When she bent down to retrieve it, she heard voices from the study. Adrian's voice. And Luna's. The door was slightly open. Julia wasn't trying to eavesdrop. But then she heard four words that made her freeze. "...she suspects nothing yet." Julia froze. Her hand tightened around her phone. For a brief moment, she wondered if she had heard incorrectly. The study door remained slightly open. A thin strip of light spilled into the hallway. Inside, Adrian and Luna continued talking. Julia's heartbeat quickened. Not because she expected anything suspicious. But because hearing her name mentioned unexpectedly always caught her attention. "...she suspects nothing yet." This time the voice clearly belonged to Adrian. Julia frowned. Suspects what? Before she could think further, Luna laughed softly. "You worry too much." Adrian sighed. "I'm being careful." "You've always been careful." A strange feeling settled in Julia's chest. She took a cautious step closer. Not enough to be noticed. Just enough to hear better. Inside the study, Luna crossed her arms. "The documents went through." "I know." "The transfers are complete." "I know." "Then relax." Adrian ran a hand through his hair. "Everything changes if Julia discovers something too early." Julia blinked. The transfers? Were they discussing company business? That seemed odd. Luna wasn't involved in Mendoza Group's operations. Why would she care about corporate transfers? Her confusion deepened. Yet before she could hear more, a floorboard creaked beneath her foot. The sound echoed through the hallway. Inside the study, silence instantly followed. Julia's heart jumped. A second later, the door opened. Adrian appeared. For a brief moment, surprise flashed across his face. Then his expression softened. "Julia." She forced a smile. "I was looking for you." Adrian studied her carefully. "How long have you been standing there?" The question came too quickly. Too sharply. Julia noticed. But she ignored it. "Only a few seconds." Relief flickered across his eyes. Gone almost immediately. "Everything okay?" she asked. "Of course." Luna appeared behind him. "We were discussing your birthday." Julia laughed. "My birthday is three months away." Luna grinned. "Exactly. Planning takes time." The explanation sounded ridiculous. But Julia smiled anyway. Maybe she was simply tired. Maybe she was overthinking. Still... The uneasy feeling refused to disappear. --- Later that night, Julia lay awake staring at the ceiling. Beside her, Adrian slept peacefully. Or pretended to. The clock displayed 2:17 a.m. Normally she would have been asleep hours ago. Instead, questions filled her mind. The transfers. The documents. The conversation. None of it made sense. She turned toward Adrian. Moonlight illuminated part of his face. He looked peaceful. Trustworthy. The same man she had loved for years. The same man who had supported her through countless challenges. The same man she trusted with her life. Julia sighed. Maybe she was being paranoid. Stress could do strange things to people. Especially after a major merger. Eventually exhaustion pulled her into sleep. Unfortunately, sleep brought nightmares. She dreamed of her father. He stood inside the old Mendoza headquarters. The building where her journey had begun. His expression was serious. Worried. Unlike any dream she had experienced before. "Julia." His voice echoed strangely. "Dad?" He stepped closer. "Be careful." A chill ran through her. "Careful of what?" Before he could answer, shadows swallowed the room. Everything disappeared. Julia woke with a gasp. Her breathing came rapidly. Sweat covered her forehead. Beside her, Adrian stirred. "Bad dream?" Julia nodded. "Yeah." He pulled her closer. "Go back to sleep." His voice sounded gentle. Comforting. Yet for some reason, Julia felt no comfort. Only uncertainty. --- The next morning, Adrian left early. Much earlier than usual. Julia noticed immediately. "Big meeting?" He nodded. "Something like that." She kissed his cheek. "Good luck." Adrian smiled. "Thanks." An hour later, he was sitting inside a private conference room on the opposite side of the city. The room belonged to a corporation called Blackwood Holdings. One of Mendoza Group's competitors. A man waited near the window. Victor Blackwood. Tall. Elegant. Dangerous. At first glance he appeared charming. Successful. Refined. But appearances often lied. Victor turned as Adrian entered. "You're late." "Traffic." Victor smirked. "People with secrets should avoid excuses." Adrian ignored the comment. "Everything is moving forward." Victor nodded. "It should." After all, Victor had spent months funding the operation. Months manipulating events behind the scenes. Months preparing for the downfall of Julia Mendoza. Unlike Luna, Victor's motives weren't personal. They were business. He wanted Mendoza Group. Its assets. Its influence. Its market dominance. And Adrian was the perfect weapon. "So?" Victor asked. "Any problems?" Adrian hesitated. "Julia noticed some transfers." Victor's expression darkened. "How much does she know?" "Nothing concrete." "Keep it that way." Adrian nodded. Neither man noticed the silent camera hidden inside a smoke detector. Watching. Recording. Capturing every word. --- Meanwhile, Julia sat inside her office reviewing quarterly reports. She tried focusing on work. But her concentration continued slipping. Every few minutes her thoughts returned to the strange conversation she had overheard. Finally, she picked up her phone. "Emma." Her assistant entered immediately. "Yes, Ms. Mendoza?" "I need a favor." Emma nodded. "Anything." Julia hesitated. The request felt ridiculous. Yet she couldn't shake the feeling. "Pull every transfer approved under my name during the last six months." Emma looked confused. "Every transfer?" "Every single one." Emma slowly nodded. "I'll start immediately." The moment she left, Julia stared out the window. Something was wrong. She felt it. Like a storm approaching in the distance. Invisible. Yet impossible to ignore. --- That evening, Luna arrived at the mansion unexpectedly. She carried shopping bags and her usual bright smile. Julia greeted her warmly. "What are you doing here?" "Can't I visit my favorite sister?" Julia laughed. "You only have one sister." "Exactly." They moved into the living room. For a while, everything felt normal. Almost comforting. Luna chatted about fashion. Travel. Restaurants. Anything except business. Anything except Adrian. Yet several times Julia caught her staring. Watching. Studying. The behavior felt strange. Almost calculating. "Is something wrong?" Julia finally asked. Luna blinked. "What?" "You keep looking at me." A brief pause followed. Then Luna smiled. "I was just thinking." "About?" How much longer until everything belongs to me. The thought flashed through Luna's mind. But her answer remained sweet. "How lucky I am to have you." Julia smiled. The words touched her. After their parents died, the sisters had become each other's family. Or at least Julia believed that. Luna reached across the table and squeezed her hand. The gesture looked affectionate. Loving. Sisterly. Yet deep inside, Luna felt nothing except anticipation. Because soon Julia's life would begin falling apart. And Luna intended to enjoy every moment. --- Near midnight, Emma finally sent the requested report. Julia opened the file. Her eyes widened immediately. The number of transactions was far larger than expected. Hundreds. Millions of dollars. Several unusual asset transfers. Complex restructuring agreements. International accounts. Offshore partnerships. The deeper she looked, the worse it became. And then she found something. One specific authorization. A transfer worth nearly fifty million dollars. Approved under her signature. Julia stared at the document. Cold fear crept into her chest. Because this one wasn't merely unfamiliar. It was impossible. The approval date matched a day she had spent overseas attending a conference. She hadn't even been in the country. Slowly. Very slowly. Julia leaned back in her chair. For the first time, real suspicion appeared. Not confusion. Not uncertainty. Suspicion. Someone was hiding something. Someone close. Someone with access. Someone she trusted. Outside her office window, dark clouds gathered over the city. A storm was coming. And Julia Mendoza had just taken her first step toward discovering the truth. END OF CHAPTER 2 PART 2 CLIFFHANGER: As Julia zoomed in on the fifty-million-dollar authorization, her blood ran cold. At the bottom of the document was a witness signature. The witness who had supposedly watched her sign it. The name read: ADRIAN SCOTT. TO BE CONTINUED...
